There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Lexington:

Homecare Program

Homecare Program, offered by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, provides eligible seniors in Lexington with services such as home management, chore assistance, home repair and home-delivered meals. Caregivers and family members may be eligible to receive respite care services, and additional resources are also available. The program is free of cost; however, to qualify, seniors must be aged 60 or older and be unable to perform at least two activities of daily living.

Senior Community Service Employment Program

Offered by Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, the Senior Community Service Employment Program connects seniors in Lexington with paid on-the-job training and employment with local nonprofits and community organizations. Career coaches provide additional support to seniors on an individual basis. The program is funded in part by a national Department of Labor (DOL) grant. To qualify, seniors need to be 55 years of age or older and have low incomes.

Health Promotion Program

The Health Promotion Program offered by the Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living is funded through the Older Americans Act. Program participants are eligible for various health promotion and disease prevention education services. There is no cost associated with the program, but seniors must be 60 or older to qualify. The agency also facilitates a Diabetes Prevention Program, which aims to prevent type-2 diabetes in at-risk seniors.

Meals On Wheels Lexington

Meals on Wheels delivery service is available to seniors in Lexington. Once enrolled, seniors receive three meals per day delivered to their homes at a subsidized rate. The meals are prepared and provided by volunteers from two local churches: the Trinity Baptist Church and the Second Presbyterian Church. There is no set age requirement; however, applicants must be unable to provide or prepare their own meals.

Homestead Exemption

This property tax exemption, offered through the Kentucky Department of Revenue, is available to eligible senior homeowners aged 65 or above in Lexington. The exemption reduces any property taxes owed for the year. Eligible seniors can apply for the exemption through the property valuation administrator in Fayette County. An application must be submitted each year to continue receiving the exemption.
