Lexington is the second-largest city in Kentucky and a popular place for older adults who want to spend their retirement years in a vibrant, history- and culture-rich city. Seniors will find lots to do in Lexington, and there are 12 hospitals serving the city, along with over 300 pharmacies. In addition, the city runs a number of supportive programs for older adults. Nursing home care costs are also low in Lexington, averaging $7,178 for a semiprivate room and $8,958 for a private room, according to the 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey.
While some seniors are able to age in place at home, other retirees find themselves needing a higher level of support, perhaps at an assisted living facility or through a home health care service. Seniors who require a high level of ongoing care may find a nursing home to be a better option. These facilities are staffed by trained nurses and aides, so both medical and practical day-to-day care needs can be met.
In this guide, we discuss the cost of nursing home care in Lexington and the surrounding areas and also look at some resources available to help seniors access the best care for their needs.

My aunt was in Tanbark Health Care Center for rehab. It was fine. (My mom was also there three years ago.) They had wonderful physical therapy, the nursing staff was very nice, and the rooms were very large and clean. Overall it was very nice. It’s located in a residential area, it’s well maintained, and the grass and everything was well kept. It fits well into the area that it’s in. It’s not homey. It’s small, but it’s definitely a rehab center. They have lots of patience; my mom had vision problems, and they were very kind and helpful. My aunt had very extensive physical therapy, and they worked with her really well.

Cardinal Hill was probably the best. Mom was there for about a month, and they were really good. The only thing was she had to share a room and she didn’t like that. They were very efficient. She had just come out of surgery and they got her back on her feet as quickly as possible. Her caseworker, every time I was there, I had access to her. They kept me informed. They were very efficient. They helped her from how she was when she got there to when she got out. They did an awesome job. They’re good. All her PTs and her occupational therapists were awesome. Some of the cleaning ladies came in and a couple of them had a bad attitude, but to me, it’s tough hiring people in that area. Most of them were very helpful. The facility was fine and clean. She just didn’t like having to share a room. Her area was pretty small.

My wife has dementia and she’s in a nursing home at The Willows at Fritz Farm. It turns out her condition is such that she’s only eligible for skilled nursing. She could not be in assisted living, so I moved her to a semi-private room which is more in line with my long-term healthcare insurance. Right now, she’s happy. It’s a good nursing home. I’m happy with it. They’re really good. I’m very impressed with them. The community includes assisted living as well as rehab and skilled nursing. It’s a mix. She’s there for long-term care. The staff has been wonderful. I’m there several times a week, and I know a lot of them by name. I have never come across anybody that was anything but very concerned, very pleasant, and very competent. It’s been a good experience. They do a good job.
They have single and double rooms. She was in a single room, which was a good-sized room, then I moved her to a semi-private. In her current state, I think she needs more activity around her rather than being in a single room because she doesn’t interact very much anymore. They’ve done a good job of getting her a compatible roommate and they care for her.
My wife is not able to participate in many activities. She likes art, so they did a lot of art. They’ve got games for people who are more able to participate. They do word searches and that type of thing. Under normal conditions, when they’re not under a pandemic, they’ve always had a lot of activities to stimulate the minds of the residents. Once in a while when I go in, she’s working individually with one of the recreation people and they have her doing something. They’ve got the therapy and they work with her every day. She’s not using her arms anymore, and her hands are clamping up and they work on that every day.
They have a beauty salon, a library, and two dining areas, one’s a little bit smaller and one’s large. They have entertainment every Friday afternoon and happy hour where they serve a little wine and they’ve got a musician coming in and playing. They try to do things to keep everybody occupied. Right now is not a good example because every nursing home is having a staffing issue. They’ve had a lot of turnover because of COVID, but I’ve been very impressed with the people they’ve brought in. It’s a good place. It’s not cheap, but I would rate everybody top-notch. I could not be more pleased and everybody that I’ve talked to and when our kids come down from Chicago, everybody is just happy as they can be under the circumstances with the care she’s getting. I feel like I’ve gotten the best place in town. I like everything. I always wish it was less expensive, but if I thought that it was not a good value, I could move her someplace else, and I haven’t done that. I’ve been in enough nursing homes where you smell urine when you go in, and you don’t ever smell anything in that nursing home.

It is a beautiful building but they take better care of the flowers outside than the residents. Physical therapy was very good but is the only thing good. Not enough aides my call button didn’t work. Guidelines & policies are practiced on a "when I feel like it" level of service. Very misinformed knowledge of patients needs & concerns. Very misinformed knowledge of their OWN responsibilities.
Food is terrible & always cold. Always have items left out from the menu.
General "who gives a damn?" attitude.
I would NEVER come here again, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

We went ahead and put mom in a nursing facility called Northpoint Lexington. The staff is fair. I think it is good. My mom is constantly complaining though. She complains about everything which is probably part of her Dementia. They have several activities throughout the day. Mother just chooses not to participate in a lot of them. She loves the bingo part, and she’ll go to the church services and bible studies there, but other than that she just doesn’t want to. There is a beauty salon there, and she’ll get her hair done tomorrow. They have arts and crafts daily, but you have to stay on them because I had to get on them a few times to do this and do that. I don’t think they’re understaffed and overworked.

My father moved into Homestead Post Acute. They’re so understaffed. He has a nice room. It’s got a huge bathroom. I mean, it’s really nice. It’s a lot nicer than the other one that my friend was in actually. The room, as far as it was, I’m surprised that it was this big. He does have a roommate. So the first couple of days there — he’s 85, so he’s really old fashioned — the roommate that they had put him with, didn’t want to keep his clothes on for whatever reason, and that really bothered my dad with me coming in and out of there. We would pull the curtain and the guy would push the curtain back. Dad mentioned it to the staff. So then they moved Dad’s roommate. It’s like they were trying to team up with someone that’s more compatible or whatever. I really liked that they did that as well. The food looks good to me. He says, "Some of that stuff I don’t want." He’s going to have to try new things. But the meals look good and then they have snacks throughout the day. He said they either put it down on the table like in a TV room, or they’ll come in and ask him if he’s in his room.

This review is for skilled nursing. We literally just moved in, now, they tell us the price is going up January 1st, $400 per month. Now we are back on the hunt to find another facility. I don’t think that was very kind of them not to tell the families just now moving in, and give them the opportunity to go someplace else. A $400 a month increase is outrageous.
Do your homework before moving in, as there are less expensive, yet more capable facilities out there.
Willows increases their prices dramatically once every year, whereas others do not increase but every 2-3 years.
Unless you’re a millionaire, and can afford this, keep going.

The average monthly cost of a semiprivate room in a Lexington nursing home is $7,178. Private rooms are slightly more expensive at $8,958.
The Cost of Nursing Home Care in Nearby Cities
According to data from the 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, Lexington is one of the more affordable Kentucky cities for nursing home care, with a cost below the state average of $7,330 and far lower than the national average of $7,756. Fees in Bowling Green in the southern part of the state are much higher, at $8,273 per month. Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Lexington, KY
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
