"We're doing homecare right now for my husband from Right at Home. We chose them because of their structure. They are located close to our home and they seemed uncommonly friendly when I called and asked about their services. Primarily, they walk with him because he no longer has direction. They help me with organizing home care. We've been using them for approximately a month now. We have had the same two caregivers and they're excellent and very personable, organized, neat, and clean. They seem to know their business and they're helping me organize. I have no difficulty at all with scheduling and billing."

"Green Staff Homecare is wonderful. They are good, and it works well. If we have plans that change, like we didn't have work today, we can call them for just a very short notice to let them not have our care worker come. So, it's been nice for us. We don't have to give a 72-hour notice, which we found with a lot of companies. We have them 5 hours a day, five days a week. They do light cleaning. They will feed meals. The companionship is there."

"A nurse from Stonebrige Care comes every day for my mom. A few times, she comes and gives her breakfast to start with. Then, after my mom takes her nap and watches TV, she makes her lunch. She is here from 9 to 4. She is the first one that the agency sends out, and we are quite satisfied with her performance. She gets along good with my mom. She is basically what we are looking for. My mom likes her and that is all we need. We like how she takes good care of her. "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Meridian:
| Resource | Contact | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Idaho Weatherization Assistance Program | (208) 746-3351 | The Idaho Weatherization Assistance Program is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy. It helps those on a low income insulate their properties, saving money on energy bills and allowing them to live comfortably during the colder months of the year. Idaho residents who are in receipt of Social Security Income are automatically eligible for weatherization assistance. Households that are not in receipt of SSI but meet the income requirements can apply online. |
| Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program | Address: 701 E. 44th Street #1 Boise, ID 83714 Phone Number: (208) 375-7382 | LIHEAP is designed to help low-income households cover the cost of their energy bills. The program is managed by local Community Action Partnerships and pays part of the cost of electricity, gas, wood or other fuels during the winter months. Crisis payments are also available for those struggling to meet their bills at other times of the year. The LIHEAP is a means-tested program based on the median income of households of a similar size in the state. |
| Homeowners Property Tax Exemptions | Address: 200 W. Front Street, Boise, ID 83702 Phone Number: (208) 287-7080 | Homeowners may be eligible for a reduction in their property taxes for their primary home. Those who are struggling to pay their property taxes have the option of applying for a deferral, giving them more time to pay the bill. Additional support is available for veterans with a service-related disability. Seniors can apply for support by contacting the Ada County Property Tax Assessor’s Office. |
| Metro Meals on Wheels | Address: Metro Meals on Wheels Treasure Valley, 4900 N. Rosepoint Way, Suite B, Boise, ID 83713 Phone Number: (208) 898-7060 | Metro Meals on Wheels is a volunteer-operated service delivering meals to seniors across Ada County. It serves more than 1,200 meals per weekday, and 850 meals on weekends to homebound seniors and those who are unable to prepare food for themselves. The service also delivers meals to senior centers in Meridian for older adults who prefer to dine in a communal environment. Seniors wishing to enroll on the service should contact the PSA III Area Agency on Aging for more information. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
