"my father is 90, and for the last 4 years he has been in and out of the hospital quite a few times.each time he was sent home he had vnsw handle his at home care. we were allowed nursing pt and aid care. most of the time, i must say this oraganization has met all my expectations upon each coarse of can... the nurses especially have proved to be fantastic.we have seen at least 8 nurses two therapist pt, 2 speach pathologists and 6 aids.vnsw has always treated my fathewr with love and respect.out pt andre and nurse repeated, ellen have become part of our family, and have come to visit for lunch when he was finished with care,,,sadly one aid mr, walter passed on but i would take him and my father out for a burger or even to the local casino,long after his duty was fulfilleed we kept in touch we miss him he was a good man. . Our aide came every morning at 9:00 a.m. to give my mother a shower, wash her hair, help her get dressed and bring her down to breakfast. Then she tidied up the bathroom and bedroom before she left. The Christmas before we tried to do everything ourselves but we were all thumbs and ended up flooding the bathroom floor and upsetting my mother. Plus we were exhausted with the effort. Having help from an aide made Mom's visit so much more enjoyable for everybody. "

"Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association really pushed unecessary services on me as a joint replacement patient. They woudlnot listen to me when I assured them I did not need a social worker for any reason or an occupational therapy. They sent everyone extraneous for one reason----not me---to collect more money. The OT walked in tool a look at me and said "I don't know why I'm here. You do not need occupational therapy." But the fee was charged and that was the motive. The social worker should simply be in a different line of work. She was also work avoidant and unreliable when we used hired this agency for another reason. Just very inappropriate and unaware and cancels 2 minutes before she was to arrive. The nurse was coming far longer than she needed to come but--again--they wanted to charge whether I needed their professional visits or not. What I needed was rest from the calls and visits of people I didn't need. What I needed and got was an excellent physical therapist for a while. They work on a schedule that suits them best according to where they live. So if you are recently out of the hospital you ay have a person arrive at 8 AM. Many physicians and orthopedic surgeons live in Ridgefield, their wives work here and you ill be referred here because of their connection to the agency. I would shop around as they are after the money first...no question. To insist on sending unnecessary professional to a patient who is post surgery just shows their priority--money--and lack of concern for the patient and their need for rest. It was an exhausting array of unnecessary visits all so they could charge for them."

"The hospital didn't have anybody, so they recommended Brightstar as an alternative. All my sister needed was companionship and people who take her out. She just goes out the door, she goes grocery shopping, and we're hoping she goes to museums. It's just basically to reduce the tension within the home. There was just too much tension going on because she had a brain surgery a year ago. Since the brain surgery, she has developed cognitive and behavioral issues, and she did not want to go into a nursing home. Originally, we had somebody coming five days a week, but now we have somebody coming in three days a week. So it's not perfect, but at least it's livable. She's fine with taking care of herself. What she needs is companionship because otherwise once she's here with us and just sits with us all day long, she starts getting argumentative and fights back. Basically it's just to get her to go out of the house. The caregiver gets along really well with my sister. She's like a security blanket. She does not do any medical stuff. She's very happy with her. The person from Brightcare is helpful because she considers the person from Brightstar a friend, while she's suspicious of her family. "

"Two years ago my father was treated at Cabrini Hospice. Although he was in his last stages of Alzheimer's disease, he was treated with dignity and respect. The nurses were very welcoming and caring. They truly understood what my dad and my family were going through. It helped being able to spend the last few weeks by my father's bedside and not be kicked out of his room because visiting hours were over. They were open 24 hours a day and even provided a cot for my own comfort and rest. While these were the most difficult moments of my life, having my father comfortable and taken care of by people who truly cared made a big difference and took a huge weight off of my own shoulders."

"This is a long term manged care provider. They are completely unorganized. I had two nurses show up saying they were both my grandmother's nurses neither one knew that the other had visited. I asked them to make a contract with the medical supply shop that we having been using for years that was not under their"managed care provider list" and they said they would yet no-one did. A physical therapist showed up without warning or calling that never came back who was sent by Elderserve to do an eval; I guess no-one thought it was necessary to contact me. They have list of which doctors you can or can not use majority of them do not do home visits (the whole list of podiatrists in Brooklyn not one of them do. and My grandmother's regular podiatrist (who does home visits) was not on their list and had to make a deal with not to charge Medicaid so he could continue seeing my grandmother. If you or loved one are being forced to switch from short term to long-term care (as everyone is with the new Medicaid cutbacks) do not enroll in Elderserve! We are being switched to a better and less controlling long term agency ICS in January. "

"If your loved one has dietary restrictions and/or dementia, think twice before enrolling them in their "Adult Day Health Program". My mom went here for a one week "trial" in their medical model adult day health program. She has short-term memory loss dementia, poor vision (legally blind in one eye) hypertension and spinal stenosis. The administrative staff seemed friendly and helpful at first, but upon a second day "visit" to drop off some meds I witnessed dietary errors, miscommunications and poor judgement of mom's needs. When I arrived to drop off some meds and vitamins mom had been taking, I witnessed mom assigned to a room with developmentally disabled and severe Alzheimer's patients. Patients unable to communicate, patients rocking back and forth, drooling or just sitting with their head down. Mom is not that bad mentally! She looked totally miserable. I was told she was confused the day before and she refused to do a crossword puzzle with the more higher functioning individuals, so they were going to "try" her out in that room. I did not feel that was a good reason for grouping her with DD and severe Alzheimer's patients. She is an introverted person and will speak if you speak to her first. She knows people, names, doesn't wander and is very docile. She was totally miserable there! As her lunch was served, I saw a dried out looking hamburger on the plate, ketchup in a package that she could not open due to arthritis in her hands, and very salty tomato juice! Mom has hypertension and is on a low fat diet, which I had reiterated to the head nurse many times, both verbally and in writing. Moreover, that morning I had discussed in depth with the head Dietician and came up with a menu plan, but they paid NO attention to it at all. Nobody was there to supervise or help her open the ketchup. Nobody even offered. I was glad I was there to help, but began to worry about the times I could not be there. The Dietician popped in to the room and just told mom she had beautiful eyes. She didn't even notice the salt laden juice on her tray, and that the menu was not as she had discussed with me at all! I had to point it out to her. Moreover, during mom's hour long assessment a week prior we were told the staff could administer meds and vitamins. We had a doctor's script giving them permission, plus the meds and vitamins in the original bottles. The first nurse in the room with DD patients was okay with it. After I requested mom to be switched back to the higher functioning group, the head nurse in that particular room promptly came at me with an attitude and stated "I can't give her these, they are not marked properly". So, which is it? It's okay to administer meds in one room, not in the other? And then it was mentioned that even OTC vitamins must have a prescription label, which was never explained to me during mom's hour long "assessment" the week prior. We had gone over her meds IN DETAIL, in person and on paper, and that was never made clear to me. The head nurse copped an attitude and said "it was in your paperwork that we MAILED to you, I ASSUMED you knew". To add insult to injury, the bus driver was irregular with pickup and drop off times and had to be told repeatedly that mom needed assistance walking to the bus due to her poor eyesight. You would think that by day four he would remember! One day when he was 45 minutes late in picking up mom, I called the home to speak to the head of transportation, whom I had met a day or so prior. The operator was rude and would not put me through. She came back on after about 4 minutes and said "he's pulling up now". I said okay, thank you and hung up. When I looked outside, he was nowhere in sight. It took several minutes before he pulled up to the driveway. By the end of the week, the phone receptionist reported that I was "yelling and screaming" at them during that phone call that mom was late, which was a big lie. They sure do know how to cover themselves and turn things around to make you look like a complainer when they do not follow protocol. Makes me wonder what else they would lie about. "
