What to Consider About Assisted Living in Orange County

The California Department of Social Services regulates assisted living facilities in Orange County, as well as in the rest of the state. The Department’s Community Care Licensing Division conducts regular inspections of facilities to ensure compliance with regulations.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Orange County

  • The overall cost of living in Orange County is high compared to the state and national averages. On a 100-point cost of living index, the county scores 167.7 versus the statewide rating of 149.9 and the national score of 100. The main driver is the county’s high housing costs, which older adults may be able to avoid by transitioning to residential care.
  • Orange County has comparatively low crime rates, which may make it appealing to older adults seeking long-term care in Southern California. On a 100-point crime index where a lower score indicates fewer crime incidents, the county scores 15.9 for violent crime and 31.7 for property crime, compared to the respective national scores of 22.7 and 35.4.
  • Orange County’s weather is comfortable throughout the year, with high temperatures ranging from 67-85 degrees. High temperatures range from 70-85 degrees eight months of the year, and humidity levels tend to be low. This may benefit seniors who enjoy spending time outdoors.
  • Health care costs, such as doctor’s office visits, dental exams and hospital stays, are about 10% lower here than the U.S. norms. There are about 249 doctors per capita in Orange County versus the national average of 210, as well as high-performing medical facilities such as MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center and MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center. These hospitals provide a range of primary and specialty services for older adults.
  • California has some of the highest state tax rates in the nation, and while seniors don’t pay taxes on Social Security benefits, all other forms of retirement income are fully taxed. To help offset some of this burden, California offers senior income tax exemptions, which may leave more money available for long-term care.
  • The OC Go Senior Mobility Program provides local transportation services to adults aged 60 and older in Orange County. This can supplement services in assisted living facilities and help seniors attend medical appointments and run errands.
