What Is Memory Care?

Memory care is specialized treatment for residents who have conditions affecting their memory, such as dementia or other cognitive disorders. Facilities offering memory care services provide a safe and healthy environment for residents and help support their daily activities as their condition progresses. This includes care from skilled staff trained to help seniors with memory loss, specially designed facilities that ease way-finding and security features that prevent residents from wandering and getting lost.

What Services Does a Memory Care Facility Provide?

Services at a memory care facility include a mix of personalized care and support in a group setting. Staff base personalized care on abilities and medical needs, including help with washing, dressing, eating, drinking and taking medication. Therapy may involve activities that promote cognition, reminiscing or calming. Social activities are designed specifically to support those with dementia to provide a safe and comforting experience. This could involve animal therapy, arts and crafts and gardening.

Care is assessed when the resident enters the facility, and loved ones are regularly kept up to date with plans and any changes to the resident’s behavior.
