The Cottages of Spokane is newer. They were just rooms that you got to rent. It was built in a circle, so no one in memory care could get lost. The place was very light, bright, and not dingy-looking. There were heated sidewalks so that when it snowed they would still be able to walk in the courtyard if they wanted to, and the people delivering the foods to the different cottages could push their carts without having to shovel, so I thought that was pretty cool. They had independent staff that worked in each of those places. All were like assigned to that one cottage, so the coverage of care was nice. The cottages were spacious enough.

About The Cottages of Spokane in Spokane, Washington
Specialized Memory Care community
- Resident must have diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s
- Resident must have a POA
- A two-year spend-down requested (under 24 months, prior approval required)
- All rooms are licensed for Medicaid
- No Hoyer lifts or sit-to-stands used; must be able to qualify as two-person assist
- Four identical cottages with up to 20 residents in each (14 rooms)
- Double shared can be rented for one person for an additional $2000
- Residents have full access to secured campus; each cottage has three doors from which residents can exit to visit other cottages
- Sidewalks are heated so that residents can exit their cottages and walk freely in all seasons
- All plants in the four-season discovery garden are non-toxic, and provide visual interest (color, bloom, aroma and texture) for three full seasons
- We have central bathrooms in each cottage. Because the vast majority of fatal falls to seniors occur in individual bathrooms, we have designed our central bathroom system to mitigate against risk. This system (three in each cottage) are designed to transition from individual use to one and two-person assistance in toileting and showering. In addition, our staff can easily keep three large bathrooms in pristine condition, instead of attempting to keep 14 individual ones clean each day. We schedule toileting prompts and brief checks/changes for residents on a two-hour schedule, so that we can assist them, observe any issues or changes in condition, clean up, keep briefs fresh, etc. We schedule showers to ensure all residents have access to the bathrooms and can get assistance easily. As we are the ninth Cottages community built by our parent company, we know this system works well and does a great job of keeping our residents safe.
- Our parent company, CarePartners Living, has the largest floating Medicaid license in the state of WA. In all our 15 communities, all our apartments or rooms are licensed to be Medicaid, instead of a small number set aside for Medicaid clients. Since we have either a 2-3 yr spend down, or accept Medicaid at the time of admission in some buildings, our residents can be sure that if they complete their spend down requirement, and need assisted living or memory care, there will always be a place for them in their own community and in all likelihood, they’ll stay in their current apartment/room after they’ve completed their spend down.
