There's a community near us that my mom was in rehab with, it's called Richfield Health Center Short-term Rehab, and we're familiar with it because it's near us. My mom was hospitalized and then placed in this rehab facility while she continued to recover. The facility is very nice. The rooms are like being in a bedroom as opposed to being in a hospital room. Most of the staff members who are there full-time are great. The traveling nurses that come through, it's hit or miss as to whether or not you get a good person. My mother was quite pleased there, but they don't work well with families, overall as we try to get information like when I tried to talk to them about my mom's diet, or about the fluid she was gaining, and all these things. They seem very accommodating to the patient themselves, but not to the families trying to help that patient. My mom has mild dementia, so we're very much involved in her care. My mom liked the food for the most part, though. It was good, maybe not the best thing you've ever had, but it was satisfying. I think some of the problems that we experienced there are probably widespread throughout the whole industry, not just limited to that facility. Because the residents are there to recover, they're not doing a lot of activities, per se, but they do bring in some entertainment once a week. They'll have someone come in to play the piano or sing, or they play bingo. What was surprising is that the physical therapist incorporated games into their physical therapy. They had an 'Olympic' competition for them, modified for what they could do, of course. They did some really neat things. Given the fact that people are sick there, I would like to see something more like twice a week, perhaps for those folks, especially as the folks are recovering and getting ready to go back home. It can get a little boring there, but they do a good job of not making it seem like a hospital. I was there almost every day and for extended periods during the day, so we were very much involved with her care. I have mentioned that the relations with the family weren't all that great and that they're good with the patients, but not with the families. That leads up to her care as well. I had a difficult time getting information from them as to what my mom was being treated for. They did call and tell us she had COVID, but if she had a UTI or if they changed her medicines, no one told us that. You're not necessarily gonna go in every day and ask if they have changed anything today, or if they have put my mom on any new medications, or if there are any new problems. My mom didn't necessarily know, too, so communication with the family regarding her care was nothing for the first three weeks until we had the family meeting and sat down and talked about an overview of what had happened, rather than having any ongoing information.

The facility therapy department was excellent. Attentive, expert and friendly. Sadly this may not be the best place for a dementia patient. Staffing is spread quite thin. They do their best. If you are a patient able to make your needs known {use your call light} it is a great place …if you or family member is advanced elderly and need help walking to the bathroom, eating and dressing it can be more difficult to obtain assistance. Family needs to be very involved when admitting an elderly patient with high needs.

I was interested in Richfield Health Center where my mother was at for rehab. The care there was wonderful. They were very caring and loving because her husband died while she was in rehab. She was not able to attend to his funeral or anything because of the Covid, but they worked very hard with her on her grief and I was very happy with them. The staff was very caring and easy to talk to. They were very good at explaining things to you. I wasn't allowed in, so I did not get to see the room. She didn't have any complaints about it, so I'm thinking her room was alright. The therapy was very good. She's a hard person to please when it comes to food. They didn't have any activities because the place was kind of locked down because of the Covid. She couldn't have visitors there which was kind of bad, but we lived through it. Communication was very good. They kept me updated really well, anytime they started anything new, even if they didn't start anything new, they would let me know how she was doing with what they were doing. She never had any complaints about her room, so I think they kept it nice and clean. I thought about putting her in the assisted living there.
