"Autumn care in altavista Va., is a wonderful place my granny stayed there for a while when she got sick. I was a little scared at first and apprehensive after hearing so many stories about abuse to the elderly, but after meeting the staff there I felt wonderful they were all natural nurturers. I really like the facility beacuse they allowed volunteers to come in and do all sorts of things to entertain the resident. Churches and kids were the best they come in to sing, read, and put on plays for the residents and at halloween time they had a really nice party where the residents could dress up and hand out candy. All in all autumn care is a wonderful place the only reason I gave them a four is because my granny didn't like the food. "

"Three years ago, my husband and I made the difficult decision to get help taking care of his mother, who was 73 and in need of more care than we could provide. We weren't willing to place her anywhere that wasn't as comfortable as our home (where she had been living with us since 2001), or where we did not think she would be happy. We chose the Guggenheimer for two reasons: one, its friendly and accessible staff. Two, the availability of religious services on a regular basis, which is something that Nancy enjoys. She had made friends there and acclimated quickly ... we live quite close to this facility as well so we are able to visit her often. It's a nice place to visit, I enjoy going there. The staff have also been extremely helpful and compassionate as her health has declined. We made the right decision for her, and I'm thankful for the quality care she has received. "

"The facility is very clean, and the staff is extremely friendly and compassionate. Some of the care providers still remember my grandmother when they see her in town. The atmosphere was positive, and she seemed very happy there. Even my children were comfortable visiting her, which they have not been at times in other assisted living facilities. Of course, Carrington Place has the same negatives that are unavoidable - somewhat "sterile" seeming (always smells like commercial cleaning products!) and it can be upsetting to see people who seem lonely or depressed and/or are in pain, but overall, it was far less gloomy than many such homes I have visited. We hope that she will not require permanent assisted living due to severe health problems, but if that were to happen, Carrington Place (or one of their affiliated facilities that would be more suitable to her needs) is one of very few that we would consider. "

"They had a large staff, and they all seemed nice and friendly. The facility offered several different stages of assisted living, with the option to purchase a house on the campus and move inside the facility to receive more help if necessary. The rooms inside the facility were very nice and came with a fully equipped kitchen and housekeeping but were a little small and pricey. The houses were also very nice, but again a bit expensive when you add in the monthly fees. The dining was excellent, with great food and the option to eat in their restaurant style dining area, pick up food to go, or even have food delivered to your door. They also offered numerous events such as bible studies, classes, and birthday parties for their residents. They also had a large amount of services such as fitness programs, physical therapy, and shuttles for the residents. "

"I had a very positive experience visiting this facility. All of the staff we very friendly and had a great, positive bedside manner. Most of the staff on the memory loss unit were very experienced in this type of care and know a lot about how to take care of their patients. The facility itself was very clean and free of clutter. The memory loss unit is a locked unit so that patients suffering memory loss could still get up and move about instead of being confined to a room. This facility seemed to be very well staffed with each patient getting individualized care. The patients that were up walking around always had someone at their side to ensure their safety. What realy sold me on this facility was that no memory loss patient was sedated or heavily medicated. "

"We have known Friendship Manor for years because we've kind of grown up in this community since the 60's. It's a massive facility now all over the valley. The people that we talked to were excellent. They answered all our questions regarding Medicaid, the facility, and services. I can't say anything bad about the staff. The staff interacted with residents. The lady who took us around was very informative. However, the whole facility is basically a hospital floor. Residents are only allowed to have a hospital bed. They cannot bring in any chairs or recliners or anything from their home. They were well taken care of, that was obvious. It was clean, but the actual facility offered nothing as far as homeyness or being welcoming. It literally was a hospital floor that they left exactly the same and put a memory care residence in. The staff who toured us was very accommodating. She worked with our schedule, and she was extremely knowledgeable. She knew what mom would need and what they could offer. She was very helpful with Medicaid, with any of the processes there, and guided us as if we were going to need that to help supplement her being able to pay for this. Honestly, it was $8,400. We were just flabbergasted. It would have been very sad because there was nothing there: no flowers and no garden. They had a 4th-floor balcony as their outdoor area that was completely concrete, nothing inviting or welcoming at all with it. I was just very disappointed with what we saw there. We would never have considered it for her. I felt like the care level was very good though. The staff interacted with the residents. I didn't see anyone sitting alone like what you think of people doing in a nursing home in memory care. You'd kind of think of them being pushed aside. The residents in Friendship were all in various areas where they could be monitored by staff. I don't feel like there was any problem with actual care. I think they were very well taken care of."

"The rooms were great when I stayed there for a few weeks the food was ok the nurses were very nice and friendly also willing to help me if I needed anything the therapist were wonderful always making sure I was in no pain or discomfort the nurses and therapists were the highlight of the day"

"My mother had to stay after her hospitalization. She was scared and honestly didn't want to go. The staff made her feel right at home and we're extremely caring. The food for patients was a little off but that understandable! The therapy was excellent, my mom really excelled and I would recommend Gretna Health and Rehab to anyone!!! Thank you all!"

"I went to South Roanoke Nursing Home Inc. I liked it very well. It's very personable. The administrator is wonderful. She knows every single patient there. She is the most caring individual I've ever been around. It was excellent, but because my friend was from Blacksburg, she wanted to stay in Blacksburg. It is smaller and older. They are in the process of upgrading it, but it is very clean. There are no odors at all. It's very friendly. Some very caring individuals work there. It's an excellent facility."
