Our experience with The Heights on Valley Ranch was very good. What we liked about them were the very responsive caretakers where if we would ask a question or bring up a concern, they responded very quickly to it. They had a very nice dining facility. Mom was having difficulty swallowing so if we weren't there, they had someone with her during meals to help her, and she responded very well to that. Initially, mom was in a two-person room, which was very tight and difficult to visit. There was only one chair in her section. It was her first day in the facility so they were kind of assessing what her needs were going to be. They wound up moving her to an observation room so she could be near the nurse's station and they keep a close eye on her. In that room, she was just the only one there with extra seating, which was very nice for the family. Her stay there was all covered by Medicare, but comparing it to other facilities, the pricing seemed to be appropriate. Their attention to detail was very good when they had to transport Mom to the hospital. After returning her from the hospital, they made sure that all of her papers made it with her so that the hospital knew who to contact. With Alzheimer's, that's very important. I was very, very pleased with all of their consideration and how they handled that.

This facility was very rehab centric, which is the reason I chose this facility for my brother, whom had suffered a stroke and needed rehab. They do have a nice gym. The physical therapist wee pretty good but the occupational therapy was greatly lacking, sometimes working with my brother only in his bed. The nursing care is lacking. Being a retired nurse myself, these nurses are only there to admit patients and address medical questions where they need to reach out to the doctor. They do not do daily assessments on patients, which as a skilled nursing facility, they should be doing for those patients. They do have aides and medication techs (who pass all meds). The facility itself is clean, and rarely did we smell any unpleasant smells like urine. Upon my brother’s admission, his television had an issue with the screen. I complained about it on day one and for several more days. It took a week for it to be addressed, and that was only when it was brought to the attention of the director of nursing. The food for patients is quite lacking in flavor, and my brother actually lost weight while he was there. The only bright spot to his visit, in my honest opinion, was the case manager Qiana, and that was regarding his discharge. She introduced us to a gentleman that helped us find a personal care home for my brother. And showed true care and compassion for my brother.
