"My mother is a life-long resident of Youngstown, Ohio. She is quite sharp mentally but has become frail over the past several years due to health issues commonly associated with advancing age. My mother came to need nursing care and assistance with independent living skills so she entered Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman, in 2013. It has been a very positive experience for both of us. When you walk into Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman, you don’t see a fancy chandelier and a baby grand piano in the lobby. The facility is clean but quite modest in its design and décor. During my initial visit, the staff noted that they focus their resources on patient care not fancy furnishings, and I believe this is true. At Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman they make sure each resident has a consistent group of caregivers and nurses that work with them daily. Consequently, when caregivers see the same residents each day, they are able to observe subtle changes in their health status and start treatment early before illnesses get a strong foothold. For example, my mother’s nurse called and said my mother seemed tired that particular day, her oxygen levels were low and further testing was ordered. Results indicated pneumonia in the very early stages. My mother was quickly treated such that the pneumonia had little effect on the quality of her life. I have been impressed on several occasions by this same pattern: subtle clinical observation based on patient familiarity, followed by testing and quick treatment. I believe my mother is getting excellent care at Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman and I appreciate that members of the nursing staff call anytime there is a change in my mother’s health status and whenever there is a change in her care plan. I am fortunate that my mother still has good communications skills and is very aware of her surroundings. She can very clearly relate to me “how well things are going.” When I call or visit my mother, she consistently says about Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman, “This is a really good place. You know I’d tell you if it weren't. They treat me very well here. Everyone is so nice. I have never heard an unkind word spoken by the staff. This is the place I want to be if I can’t be at home.” I feel very fortunate my mother is a resident of Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman and that she feels content there. I certainly would recommend it to anyone searching for this level of care for a loved one. "

"My mom moved into Windsor Estates Assisted Living for a respite stay. It's an absolutely excellent place. I have no complaints at all. They're wonderful. My mom says the food is good and there's plenty of it. She's enjoying all the activities that they have. She was not being real social at home, but once we got her in there, I think they kind of drew her out a little bit, and she's back to being social and happy and enjoying things. So, they've been really, really good. She said all the staff are very friendly and very helpful, and she's very comfortable with them. She says she has a very comfortable room. She feels good being there. They put a lift chair in the room for her. The furniture in her room is very nice and in very good condition."

"My sister moved to Windsor House at St Mary's Alzheimer's Center. The things that we like the most are that they are very well staffed and the staff is extremely understanding of the patients and family. They are friendly and outgoing and try to anticipate what my sister might need. They are attentive to the needs of both the patients and the family. From what I've been told, from my sisters, they provide help for the patients. They're attentive to them in the dining room where they might need their food cut up or a different menu than maybe what they thought they had ordered. It's very clean. The only thing that is at a disadvantage, but this isn't something anybody can help, is the location. My family is in Youngstown, and going to Columbiana is a little bit of a drive, but when a person is in a place where they are well taken care of and safe, that's probably the least of anyone's concerns. The fact that it's clean, orderly, and tuned into patients and their families, I think those are probably the first concerns. My sister reported that there's plenty to do if you want to do it."

"My mother is in Woodlands at Austinwoods. You couldn't go in the place, but I think things are going well with my mother right now. She seems pleased with the food. Everything isn't like home, but there's a nice mix. The food isn't the same thing every day by any means and that is good. Some days are better than others, but she's quite pleased. They do a few things, but not much."

"It's not as fancy as some other facilities that look like a hotel but has a very warm and caring atmosphere. It was situated in a huge wooded area and my Mom loves outdoors. This is one of the things that we like because it would make her really comfortable.They had actually a couple of units available. We were able to tour those. The units were very nice and clean and it's everything that she would need. The setting was very nice with a window and a view of the courtyard and the flowers and trees. It was very nice. The staff were very nice. We were kinda leaning toward this facility because it fits my Mom's personality better. Also, you get to spend less money but you get more than what you will be paying for. This is the one we are leaning toward by the time my Mom is ready to live in an assisted living facility. "

"The staff is fantastic and loving and clearly care about our Mom. She used to work there before she became a resident. She always had good things to say about the facility and formed wonderful relationships with patients, then when she became one, staff has been very kind with her. It is always clean, there is never an unpleasant odor (like nursing homes of our childhoods), and it is cheerful. There are things around to amuse the residents and they led them in activities so for example the memory care patients would bop a ball around while they watched tv. Meals were fine and they make sure my Mom always gets one. My brother came by before COVID to take my Mom out to the park and they helped make that possible for both of them. It's a wonderful place. I am sad my Mom has to be in a home. But I am glad she is in this home. "

Overall care was compassionate, concerned, and outstanding by all from the executive director, nurses, aides, rehabilitation and recreational staff, and the medical director.
