Nursing homes offer around-the-clock care for seniors who don’t require hospitalization but are unable to be cared for at home due to their extensive medical needs. Seniors who don’t require this level of care may want to look at more affordable options, such as assisted living or home care services.

Hi! Because of hurricane damage my Dad is now in his fourth care facility in two years . This means at 91 he has had to make new friends and leave them and move yet again.
He has no use of his legs
He arrived on Friday and was embarrassed because he needed to go to the bathroom when they got him in bed. He told the nurse. She got an aide right away who got him on the toilet. My Dad said then the aide took a warm wash cloth and wiped hi. He said that felt so good! Today, Saturday, he said several times people came in to ask him if he needed anything.
Thank you everyone for your caring. My Dad is George Brown and he is a connector, never complains and is an asset to every facility he has resided in. Thank you for your most excellent welcome. Keep up your outstanding work!

My mom is doing rehab at PruittHealth – Neuse in New Bern. They’re releasing her this coming Thursday. The facility is clean and the staff is very helpful, very kind, and answered any kind of questions we had. They’re treating my mom well. She also loves the food there.
What I like most is the people that worked with my mom because they showed her a lot of care and engaged her in a lot of conversations. That was good for her socially and health-wise. There was just one nurse that I felt was a little harsh but she was only there one time. Everybody else, the ones bringing the food and the CNAs, were outstanding.
One concern we had was when they review her medication list, they took away certain medications that we have worked hard to get for her. It just kind of seemed like when she had a particular complaint and I was trying to get that medicine back on her list, they kind of gave her a hard time about it.

Brook Stone Living Center is doing very well, so far. They’re very clean and they offer skilled nursing care that not many do. My mom is in their skilled nursing care and it’s very hard to find. The staff is very good and very professional.
My mother doesn’t use the amenities, she can’t get out of bed and she’s immobile, but they have activities for those people that live there that can do things like bingo, different church functions, and things like that.
Their rooms are very spacious and they have a large staff that checks on my mom all the time and helps her when she needs help. They do a good job.
Their food is nutritious and has a variety to accommodate different conditions like diabetes and stuff like that. I’ve visited a lot of places and they’re the best fit for my mom.

This facility has been running for a while. Even though it’s not a five star resort I found the care to my loved one was top notch. Nothing is ever perfect, but when I concerned issues they were heard and staff tried to accommodate them. Rooms are double occupancy and small with a shared bathroom. One cna named Melissa provided top notch care for my family member. She went beyond the call to help him before he left to go home.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in New Bern, NC
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
