The northern Massachusetts city of Haverhill is a quiet college town on the New Hampshire border. Home to over 67,000 people, 14.5% of the town’s residents are seniors aged 65 and over. Seniors in Haverhill have access to world-class care from several local hospitals and medical centers, such as Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, which has a dedicated senior health department. Nursing home costs in the city average $13,155 a month for a semiprivate room, which is higher than the national average cost of $7,908, according to the Genworth 2021 Cost of Care Survey.
Nursing homes provide a higher level of care than less medically intensive types of senior living arrangements, such as assisted living or home health care. Commonly available features to look for in a nursing home include 24-hour monitoring and close supervision for medically needy seniors, medication management and skilled nursing care that includes therapeutic and rehabilitation services.
This guide goes over some of the costs of nursing home care in Haverhill, as well as several other types of senior care. It also lists resources that are available to help seniors live independently in their own homes.

My mother is at the Country Center for Health and Rehabilitation Newburyport. The upkeep and the cleanliness are above average. She shares a room with another woman. They keep the room spotless. It’s always in great condition. She is there for rehab, and she gets the minimal amount of physical therapy. I don’t believe that she’s getting enough, and I don’t know if it’s because they are short staffed or what. I think that she could have improved if they had spent a little more time with her.
I believe that the rehab is on the first floor, and so that’s where my mother is. I think that the nursing home itself is on the second and third floors where they would offer activities for the people that reside there in the nursing home. The food seems okay. My mother is happy with it.

Other than that, it had a fancy dining room, nice rooms, a nice foyer, and security. I didn’t meet as many people in that one as I did in the other place, but the ones that I did were very friendly and very helpful when I ask questions. They were very nice to say, "If you don’t need it now, keep us in mind when you do." The room I saw was a little smaller, but it was nice. It had a kitchenette, but it didn’t have a stove or anything.

It always smells good, it doesn’t smell like disinfectant or like a hospital. They are outstanding. It’s a small community, and it is very clean, very neat, and orderly. They have caring staff. Mom has a shared room, with a private bath and a view of a very nice garden. Even though she has a roommate, they have their own space and their own privacy. I’ve tried their food and it’s good. The dining area looks very neat and clean. They have different activities like cooking classes and community things. The therapy team there is very good. This facility’s price is comparable with the others in the area, and we are very pleased to be there. Their care team is super and I am impressed with their social worker in particular.

My relative is at Sutton Hill Center. He has only been there for only two weeks. However, for a dinner meal, he indicated fresh-cut strawberries because he is diabetic, and they had given him a piece of cake with strawberries. I read the receipt and I went to the front desk, and they were laughing. I said, ‘Listen. This receipt clearly states fresh-cut strawberries, and you gave him a strawberry cake. He has diabetes.’ They mixed things up down there and they were laughing. I said, ‘I don’t think this is funny. The person has a condition, and he cannot eat cake. He is taking insulin four times a day.’ And then one of the girls, she goes downstairs, she takes the receipt, and she is like, ‘Sorry. They’re out of strawberries.’ Are you serious? I’ll give them very bad reviews at this point, but we had only two weeks of experience there. When the nurse came to inject insulin, she just injected him, and then neglected him. I said he doesn’t want to eat because he’s depressed and he was crying, and she’s like, ‘Well, he has to eat,’ and then she leaves.
They had terrible, terrible food. What they gave my relative for dinner was a piece of sausage, two broccoli flowers, 10 French fries, and a small piece of bread, and that was his dinner, and it was 5:00. I said to the girls, ‘This is it? He doesn’t eat until tomorrow at 8 a.m.?’ It’s terrible.
The facility was clean. My relative was in a single room, which was OK. But now, they moved him with someone else, so he is not alone anymore. The rooms are OK. They have activities. They have an area where they can go, but the problem with him is that he cannot walk. I don’t know if they help them to go downstairs and socialize and it doesn’t seem to be the case. But when we go to visit him, we make sure we bring him downstairs. They have an area there for people to socialize, they have the dining room, and they have a little garden at the back. The facility is decent if they can utilize it. But I don’t think that is the case for him.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Haverhill, MA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
