Nursing Home Communities in Mattoon, IL

"I had my wife at Heartland Christian Village for a while. The staff was above average, and there was a high level of conscientious behavior on the part of the administrator and the senior nurses that I had a chance to be exposed with. They had a few private apartments if you didn't require full-time nursing care and wanted to be able to utilize the centralized eating facilities. If you needed to, you could migrate from the apartment into the nursing home at some later date. She had Alzheimer's, and they did not really have the facilities to be able to cope with Alzheimer's patients in the evenings. It did not have the staff or the manpower to cope with them outside of the time shift. However, you could come in on daycare. You just couldn't have somebody there on a full-time evening basis. They seemed to have a wide variety of spaces available -- private rooms, double rooms -- and they have a Medicaid room as high as four to eight people in them, which was a warehousing-type of environment and not very tasteful. From the standpoint of recreational facilities, they had regular games, activities, walks, and painting classes. They had a nice indoor courtyard that you could go and sit in and watch the birds or butterflies. "

"I have found Mason Point for my husband. The people are very nice. The rooms and food are fine. They have a TV, telephone, and cable. They provide three meals a day and laundry service. The grounds are very nice with lots of trees and green space. It's adequate, and the price is not bad at all. It's cost-effective. They also take Medicaid. They have a doctor and a podiatrist on staff, plus a hairdresser, an ice cream parlor, and a library. It is nice, but it is a nursing home. "

"The staff is great at Eastview Terrace. I have no complaints, so far. They're taking great care of my mom. The building is old, but could be updated. It's a single story. The nurse's station is in the middle of the building, and then there's a wing to each side of that station. I like that setup because no one is really very far from the nurse's station. There's a lot of staff, and they're always mingling around and know what's going on. It doesn't matter who answers the phone, they know my mom and know what's going on. I was able to try the food on Saturday before Mother's Day and what we had was great. The facility seems clean. It doesn't have a strong odor like some nursing homes do. It's just beaten up. It needs to be spruced up, but it's not dirty. They take a lot of Medicaid patients too."

"My wife stayed at Arthur Home for 1 night. It was an expensive overnight, but they did well. They had bingo and daytime TV. The food was fine. It was private pay and that was the most expensive option you can get -- which cost a couple hundred dollars -- but it was worth the money."

"Cumberland Rehab is owned by a company called Petersen. They were unique in that they had a daycare facility. The staff was highly accommodating. I was very surprised at the quality of care and attention that you could get from the staff. They were quite good. However, they would not take Alzheimer's patients overnight. They did not feel they had adequate staffing to cover the potential escapes that might occur with Alzheimer's patients, but they did take them on a daycare basis. You bring a patient, send them in the morning, and pick them up at 5:00 or 6:00. It offered me as a primary caregiver the opportunity to be able to pick my wife on a daily basis or every-other-day basis or twice-a-week basis, so I could go about some daily chores, and that worked out very well. She was able to eat one to two meals per day there, depending upon what time she arrived and what time I picked her up, which were very adequate. "

"Tuscola is very clean, and the help is very caring. The ratio of help to residents is good. They have a lot of activities for the residents; musical entertainments come in, they have bingo, and they have wine tasting. They either have private rooms or double rooms, and it’s all nice. Every room has a window, and the bathrooms are connected. My mother has a large private room, and it’s convenient to where I live."

"The facility was kept clean and the usual nursing home smell was kept to a minimum. Rooms were clean and neat as well, and I never heard a complaint from my aunt about the cleanliness. The dining room was well-lit and cheery and clean, and the commons area was nicely decorated for the appropriate season or holiday.Staff was firendly to us when we visited, but the only complaint about the facility I ever heard from mom or aunt was about a careless or rude staff member. I spoke to the director about these complaints and she asssured me the employee in question would be talked to about the situation - she was responsive.The food was adequate at best, as it usually is in the less well-to-do nursing homes, but my aunt seemed to be well fed and had no major, consistent complaints about the food. Meds were given consistently and other care - baths, hair, etc. - were taken care of in a professional way.Overall I was pleased with the care at Lakeland and my mother and aunt were as well. "

"My mother is in Effingham Rehab, the staff members are all amazing, and they're really nice and caring. The building is older, but it's clean, and the staff is better than in other newer places. They also have activities for the residents, although my mom is in no condition to participate. I've seen people reading and doing crafts."
