Mattoon Healthcare and Rehab Center was a very good nursing home. They had a very good administrator and the food was good. It was just short-staffed a lot of the time like most nursing homes were. The biggest issue they had was being short on nurse's aides. I shared a room with another resident and we got along fine. We both had televisions and I had a recliner that I could sit in in my room to be more comfortable. They had a pretty good activity program and I went to it all the time. They had good activity directors.

I got my mom into Mattoon Healthcare and Rehab. She is already in and set up, and everything is taken care of. She has only been there for a week, but so far they have been pretty on top of things. She has advanced dementia, and she is out of it, so as far as finding out anything from her personally, it's going to be impossible because she is not communicative, and she is in hospice, too. But I've talked to three or four different people at different positions about her meds and all that sort of stuff, and we got that straightened out and squared away. Compared to Joliet where I live, the value for the money is pretty good. I haven't really perused the place; I've just been in the office to do the intake history, so I haven't really walked around to see the facility. But I've known about this facility for a long time, and my uncles were there, and as far as having the reputation, I have always received good reports from family and friends about the place.

The care at Mattoon Healthcare was alright, but it wasn’t anything special. My husband had to go to rehab a couple of weeks ago, so we took him to Mattoon. He was there for 4 days, and he got all scarred out of diaper rash. It was just disgusting. They need to pay attention and change diapers more often. His room was adequate, and it was clean. What was nice about it was when you walk in the front door, they have a big round pool of water with a fountain in it, and it was just a beautiful entry way. I don’t think they had enough staff. The food was fine.

My mother has been without hot water and a running sink for 3 weeks now. The maintenance man said there are priorities higher on his list!!! Very unprofessional!!!

This facility gives my mother and step father adequate care. They need more training and education for the staff on caring for Alzheimer's patients.
