We visited Trustwell Living at Hunters Crossing Place to take a look at their assisted living. I can say that the staff we met with was very pleasant and very knowledgeable. We toured the building, and it was clean and kept up well. They're in the process of updating, so they're replacing the carpet and painting the walls. The building is like a block so no matter where you walk, as long as you go in one direction, you will come right back to the same place. In the center of all of that is a beautiful garden that they've been working on, and there's a very large screened-in patio area that probably has about 10 or 15 sofas and chairs, and other patio furniture. The room that we picked out has two small rooms. One room will hold a bed and a very small dining room set with a little table and two little chairs. It has a kitchenette, too. That room with her bed will have a TV on the wall. She'll have a nightstand next to the bed and a chair for her to sit on and put her shoes on. It has a huge walk-in shower and a big bathroom. The other room she's going to use as her living room and sitting room. She's going to have two recliners in there, a table and lamp, and she's going to have a dresser in there underneath the TV. There's a large closet that is open, but it's not one that you walk into. It's just like an alcove, and we're going to put a curtain there so that you don't see the contents. It's very nice. I'm not sure what their titles are, but there's one gentleman there who has kept in touch with us and has given us advice to help us find primary care for this relative of mine. It helped us in the process of getting this done. We met with the director, too. She visited with us and was very pleasant and down-to-earth. She also gave us a lot of advice on where to look for things and told us what services are available. We visited during lunchtime, and there were a lot of people in the cafeteria-like area. It has a lot of tables and a very pretty atmosphere. When we got ready to leave, we learned that you have to push a button for somebody to come, so one of the workers in the kitchen was nearby and came by to open the door for us and to let us out. I can go and have lunch with my loved one anytime. I could go and pick her up, take her out to lunch, or come and participate in some of the activities. They have bingo, and they have a movie with popcorn, and a couple more things. I can do any activity with her, it's encouraged for the family to do that.

I was very impressed with Hunters Crossing Place. The people there were super nice. They had a lot of nice activities. I met with the staff member, and she was very nice, and very personable. It was also homey and very clean. They had a library and a beauty salon.

My mother is only doing respite care, and she is staying at Hunters Crossing in Gainesville. Elaine -- who I initially spoke with -- was marvelous. She was very caring and provided a lot of information, but then my mother decided she would continue to live with my brother. But the responsiveness was excellent. Everyone that provided my name went out of their way to do what they could. The rooms were very nice, clean, and well decorated. The staff was highly attentive, and they were all very caring. The atmosphere was great. I could see their snacks and drinks. My mother seems very happy, and she has been there about four days.

The rooms in Hunters Crossing Place had low, 8-ft ceilings, so they looked a little small. The dining area looked inviting and was an open room with a bunch of tables in it. At the entrance, they had a great room where they had musical entertainment sometimes and a man cave down one of the hallways. The staff was very nice. We met the chef, but we did not have a meal there. The marketing person was very nice.

We toured Brookdale, and it was a very nice facility. It wasn’t on our top 3 because we had to narrow it down, but then when we learned that my mom did not qualify for one of the top choices, we went ahead and registered for Brookdale to be on the waitlist for them. When we went back, it seemed that the people were very friendly. The situation is my mother is in Virginia, and I am in Kansas and my cousin who is her main carer set up an appointment with a nurse. They offered to come out as that would have been much easier, and she said sure. The nurse that she spoke with ended up for labor day, but he didn’t show; that was a bit of a disappointed but it made it easier for use to decide. The nice thing is they refunded the entire amount. I put a $500 deposit down, and they told us that there will be a processing fee. If she didn’t stay there, it would $100 that they will keep, and they didn’t keep it; we got the check yesterday for $500, so that was a nice surprise.
