Gainesville residents benefit from Florida’s sunny climate and the city’s many offerings, which include theaters, parks and varied restaurants. It’s no surprise that lots of older adults pick this city as their home. Gainesville’s population includes an estimated 133,997 people, and 10.8% of those residents are seniors 65 years of age or older. For medical care, they have a robust option in the UF Health Shands Hospital, which has nearly 900 physicians on staff. Its specialties include neurology, surgery and rehabilitation. The North Florida Regional Medical Center and the Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center are also in Gainesville.

For support at home, Gainesville seniors have access to many quality home health care providers. On average, monthly home care in Gainesville costs $4,004, and home health care costs $4,671 per the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey. Nationally, the average rate for home care is $4,481, so Gainesville is cheaper on that front. However, Gainesville’s median home health care cost is higher than the corresponding national rate of $4,576.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Gainesville area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
