"Windemere Park was very nice but they're so expensive at $3000 a month, that's with food. It was an apartment inside a big building. It used to be a big hotel, I understand. They had a man entertaining the people there. "

"American House Sterling Woods was very nice, the facility was very up-to-date, and they had a chapel there, which I thought was very nice because my mom is Catholic. There's a chapel there where she could have service once a month. The residents do rosary readings amongst themselves, so I think that's something nice for her because she is spiritual and that's kind of a benefit for her that she may take interest in. Maureen, the one who I spoke with over the phone and met in person, was actually fantastic and very informative. She actually offered additional services if need be, like a moving company. If you're bringing extra stuff with you, this moving company can assist you. I thought that was kind of beneficial. Not only is she about American House, she also provided insights with other amenities that could potentially be beneficial to us. They also have a place in the facility where my mom would have space. If she would want to bring some Christmas decorations to decorate for the holidays and it's seasonal, she could keep it in her personal locker area with her personal belongings. It wasn't much, but enough that it would not overdo the apartment and enough that she could have it with her in this locker room area. The place was very nice and very clean. The time that we were there, there weren't any residents there, so I didn't see any interactions with the residents, but the staff seemed really friendly. The cleaning people walking by, the receptionist, and Maureen who showed us around were very pleasant, warm, and welcoming."

"American House Westland Hunter was a three-story building. I liked that at the beginning of the month of April they're going to have a one-bedroom open on the third floor. If I go there, that's what I'll probably pick. It's right off the elevator, so maybe I can get right on that spot so my dad doesn't have to walk the hallways. The staff there was really, really nice. They have activities during the day and they play cards. Some of them would play after hours, like after dinner, where they'll get games together. The lady that did the tour was very helpful. She showed me a two-bedroom, a one bedroom, and a studio. There was an exercise room, too. The place was very clean. It's not brand new, but it's well kept up."

"The facility is absolutely gorgeous. It is very clean and well kept. The staff members are extremely friendly and attentive to all residents, family members and guests. The activities are abundant and fun for all including family members that are always welcome to join such as weekly chair volleyball.. My mom absolutely loves living there and has found many friends to spend her time with."

"Oakwood Common is very nice. It's expensive, but their price includes amenities including food and they clean your apartment. TV cable and utilities are all covered except for the phone. They seemed to have lot activities. From what I saw, they have a couple of calendars and it seemed like it's an active community. The staff seemed very congenial and a little high class. The surroundings are nice and they have areas to walk around with trees. It's a plush place. "

"I moved to Victoria Square. I like that it's senior living, so you're dealing with just seniors. They have a great community where they do things in their lobby or a little get-together at certain times. I like that it's secured where you need a key or be buzzed in, and no one can walk into your building. I also like that, in senior living, they cap you at a certain amount depending on your status, as far as you can pay, so they can't increase your rent like if you were in a regular apartment. The staff is pleasant. They have bingo and programs. They keep the facility clean and have maintenance people come through. I like that they have garbage storage on each floor and make sure to clean them daily so you don't smell anything throughout the building. As for the value, it's average. It's not a bad price for what you're getting."

"The Rivers was beautiful. It was brand new. They gave us a tour of the facility. They showed us the menu and gave us a floor plan. It was very nice. They showed us the activities they were having as well. "

"Marycrest was very clean and smelled new. My mom liked the activities and the fact that there was a step-in shower and a washer and dryer in the unit. Also there was cupboard space in the kitchen. We were there during an open house. Marycrest has individual apartments, so you don't need to partake in the food service, and that's one of the other thing my mom is looking for. They have card playing and chair exercises. They have a shuttle, too. My mom likes the fact that they are heading to the store, to the shopping area, out to lunch, and to movies. Marycrest is my mom's favorite place. The people we talked to were all very nice."

"My mom is now a resident of The Woodhaven Retirement Community. The place is very clean, although they need more help with the nursing or help staff. The food is excellent and they have great activities, it's just nice. My mom doesn't do them, but they have bingo, movie nights, they do arts and crafts, and plenty more. The staff would depend on which one. There are several that are very, very good and very sweet, you can tell that they care, and then there might be one that's not doing what she should be doing, or maybe the personality is just different. They have their own dining that they could do, and on Mondays, through Fridays, they have a bistro where you could get things like chicken nuggets and small food. The place is in a very nice area, so it's wooded, and there are deers that come up to my mom's window, there are animals there like birds and squirrels. So the older folks enjoy that."

"I did a tour of the Hampton Manor of Clinton. The staff was very pleasant and knowledgeable. But overall, the facility had much more of a clinical setting, and they didn't have as much to offer as far as the medical care side of it. They weren't going to be able to meet the medical needs of my mother. They have a hair salon, and a movie room set up with nice, reclining chairs and projection TV if you want to watch a movie. They had a conference room available for a family if you wanted to have a family gathering or meal there together. They had a conference room with a big table that could be used for that. The staff didn't tell us much about other activities. They didn't seem to have a lot of planned activities with games, community gatherings, and stuff like that. There was no problem with the tour. They showed us all of the extra rooms, each different room that was available; so that was all fine. The dining area was small, dark, and not very inviting. I don't know about the food, but the atmosphere, the area itself was not very friendly looking. It's a brand-new facility."

"Alaya Care LLC was very nice. It looked a little bit used, but it was still very nice, and I liked the woman in charge very much, Reinka. She was wonderful. The memory care unit was good. It seemed rather large and had room for two people in it. They had a whole room devoted to activities for people and a dining area that looked real nice too."

"Oakmont Northville is able to accommodate my brother's gluten-free dietary requirement, and he enjoys it there. They have people come in with their dogs to see the residents. They have entertainment; they play Wii games, Bridge, and Euchre. I like it a lot. My brother said the food is very good. I don't think their price is out of range. They have a building attached that takes care of Alzheimer's patients -- which is sort of a nice transition if needed. "

"Waltonwood was very nice. All of the apartments had a balcony or a terrace, and we did eat there. The food was very good; staff was very accommodating. The whole place was nice and open, and the amenities were quite nice. They seemed to have a lot of activities including some trips to parks. They had a well-stacked library; it had a theater with movie-style seating, and it showed films every night. They had a bistro which was nice for snacks, and it had regular entertainment. "

"Fox Run is a really good community. It is also highly respected in our area. The rooms are beautiful and well-appointed. The staff is excellent, helpful, and they'll do anything for you. We had lunch there several times and the food is always excellent. They have every type of activity you could think of as well as dozens of clubs. It's a well-organized place. "

"Waltonwood wasn't as cheery a place but it was very nice. I think it was a little older but they were improving it. Nevertheless, it was conveniently located as it was right next to a shopping center. The residents and staff there were very friendly. They didn't have as many selection on the menu for meals but it was fine. This would be a place that I would really choose. "
