My husband has been in Tampico Terrace Care Center for a month now. It's horrible. He hadn't had a bath in 11 days. When he lost the ability to feed himself, he kept telling them, 'I can't feed myself. I'm just spilling food all over.' It took them five days to put him on a feeding plan, and that was only after I went in and told them that this was not acceptable. So as far as his care goes, it's horrible, which is the only way I can describe it. My husband is a bedridden patient in hospice care because he can do nothing for himself. He is 99% disabled. His room is not very clean. The staff is really good, but it's just that I have to go and say to them, 'He needs a bath.' It's like they don't see the needs as they're developing. If there were another VA nursing home close, I would probably be moving him. Unfortunately, there's no nursing home close to where we want to be near our son, so I'm just going to be here to make sure he is being taken care of. I think being proactive in terms of the patient's needs is what they need to improve. I asked if there was a schedule for giving a bath, and they looked it up, and they said my husband is on Saturday and Wednesday, and I said, 'So how did he go 11 days with no baths?' And they had no answer. It's kind of like, if you go up and you complain, they get right on it, but you shouldn't have to go up and complain about stuff like that.

My husband is still in rehab at Tampico Terrace Care Center. It's connected to John Muir Hospital, and we're members of John Muir Health plans. It's very close to the hospital. It's fine. Because of this darned virus, it just makes me so angry, because I can't see him except through the window. I don't like it. The biggest reason is because he was in isolation for two weeks in one room by himself. He is lonely. He doesn't see many people except for two hours a day when the various rehab people come in and give him exercises. He has just recently moved into a room with a roommate. He has been there twice. The first time was when he had a fall. He was in the hospital for three days and then they put him in there. He was only in there a little bit because they said he was fine to come home. From then on it was downhill. My husband is in bed all day long. They just come in for two hours a day for rehab. The room he just got out of was horrible. It was a big room and he was all by himself. It wasn't very lit up. It had a couple little lights, but he was in bed all the time. Now, I don't know if he is in with someone else, maybe that's going to be better because there will be company? The employees are not very responsive. I called and I called and I tried to get someone to call me back, but they didn't call back. I tried to get connected with the right person and I never got the right one. It's not very good. They're not very responsive. It's a care facility with rehab, but rehab is only a couple of hours a day, and he is in bed all the time, so he is not rehabbing very well. It is not good. He is not having a very good prognosis. His improvement is not improving.

My mother was at Tampico Terrace for 3 weeks. I give them very high marks. First, everyone I interacted with was really friendly and supportive. Second, they were very informative. If I asked a question of a nurse or therapist, they responded with clear information that had been entered into their system. Their responses were clear and data-driven. Finally, the administrative staff was incredibly helpful and informative regarding insurance and other coverage questions. They really made things easier on my father and me.
