"The Ivy at Golden Gate was very welcoming. I liked its cleanliness, brightness, and the atmosphere. The activities director was our guide, which was fine, but she was not able to answer more detailed pricing information. But she was personable, accommodating, and professional. I was very impressed with how she handled me. I was told they have about 100 staff there and that they have a lot of staff members that have been there 20 years. If a person moves into independent living and would require more care, he could stay in the same room. And that's one thing I liked about this facility. They incorporated residents' feedback and requests as they developed their activity list. They had the whole month published and it encompassed a lot of different interests. They had a separate men's group that did some really neat things geared towards men's interests. They had a store that was run by the residents that could help provide fun things and common daily basic needs. They had a resident board that could interact between the residents and administration as a voice. So, I felt like it was a really strong community and good interaction between residents and staff."

"My brother moved to Buena Vista Manor House. Location is important to us and so we chose that place because it is centrally located for our family in San Francisco. It's an intimate facility. It's not too big and everybody seems to be very nice and accommodating. My brother seems to be getting along very nicely there and the people have been open to his disability and trying to work with that. They provide three meals a day. I had lunch the other day when my brother had some food and it was good. It was a cold lunch for me. I didn't have a hot meal, but they have nice proportions, and a varied menu, and they give you a balanced meal. There's protein, fruit, and liquids. They should have some area though, where you could have water or coffee if you want, like a little side station where during the day, residents/visitors could have a cup of coffee or some iced water or snacks. Pretty much the kitchen's only open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There's no overflow of snacks or anything. They have daily activities for the residents and I see people participating and having a good time with that. My brother is in a small room that gets cleaned every week. They do laundry service and they distribute his medicines, but there's no nursing care, and that's one negative."

"It was very nice, and we enjoyed meeting with them. What we liked about it was that it was in front of a park, and that park also had yoga classes. The staff was very helpful, they were very informed, and they followed up with us a lot to make sure that all our questions were answered. They invited us to St. Patrick’s Day. There is a variety of food and it changes all the time. They had a nice meal program. "

"Sagebrook Senior Living is beautiful. I love it. It's just a bit too steep. They want $6,800 without the care, and that's kind of a bit too much for our income. The community is great. The view was fantastic. The accommodations were great. The staff was very nice and very helpful. The dining area was lovely. It had a piano and everything. It was really nice. I have nothing bad to say about it. We had lunch, and it was good. It looked like their families were there, so they were chatting and associating with their families, and then they went outside. It is old, and they're still doing construction."

"I have my mother and my sister being cared for at Coterie. My mom is more involved at Coterie and the care is exceptional compared to other homes she has been, not that the care has been bad at other home, they just have a better wat of giving the residents the care they need at Coterie. She is on the 4th floor which is memory care, and couldn't be happier. The meals are well thought out and they always have the memory care residents busy with something like singing dancing, puzzles and crafts. Couldn't be happier with the care they are receiving. My sister is in assisted living at Coterie, she is a special needs resident with some challenging needs that Coterie has stepped in and is giving her the care needed. Coterie is the first home to give her the freedom she deserves and needs (she has been in locked down memory care until Coterie) and seems to be thriving although not without some hiccups, but again Coterie is up to this challenge and my family and I are extremely happy with the care she has been receiving."

"The Carlisle was completely different from the other places. It was very upscale. The staff was of the highest quality, better than in any place I had seen, and they were the best that I have encountered so far. They had a wonderful dining area that had a dress requirement. The men had to wear a suit jacket or a sports coat like the older days. The woman had to wear a nice pantsuit or a nice dress. They had waitresses that came and requested your order and brought it to your table. Two meals were included, and you had to pay extra for the third meal. You could have your family there at dinner, and you could have a private dining room. The rooms were totally different. First of all, you had to buy in, and then you had a monthly fee. The monthly fee was based on the size of unit you bought, which could be a studio, one, or two bedrooms with nice big balconies and nice big refrigerators. They had a string to pull in the room, in case you had a problem. Since you bought the unit, you could change it around, like putting in a different bathtub or toilet. They had really nice, carpeted, well-lit, and wide hallways; two wheelchairs could easily pass each other. They had nice big elevator where you could fit a lot of people and even 10 wheel chairs. The elevator also had seats, so you don't have to stand. They had musicians that came in every afternoon, and they also had tea. So you could have tea and live music. They also had a small movie theater for watching movies, and they served popcorns. It had a wonderful underground parking are, which was nice and very safe. I liked that it was right in downtown San Francisco, and they would take you anywhere you want to go within five miles for free. They had malls, music, symphonies, and museums all right there, and you could walk to most of them. "

"We looked here. We love this place. We live in San Francisco, so it was perfect. The nice thing about it is the location for us. I can get there like in 20 minutes driving. The location is very good. It is an urban environment, but you don't feel like it when you go in. It's very nice. It doesn't feel small, but it is nice. The staff who welcomed us was fine. He was very straightforward. We went in there interested in the below-market rate program that they have there. They have a medical part too, so that was something attractive for us. They have a little outdoor place where you can go sit. It is surrounded by the buildings so there's no chance you can get out without somebody knowing because it is sort of within."

"The very first one we saw was The Stratford. It's quite an elegant place. It presents very nicely. It's very nice and clean. The units are a little bit on the small side, but very nice, and they have (I think) 11 floors, so it's a high rise, and they have nice views. Everything about it seemed very nice. The staff who accommodated me was very nice and very accommodating. She answered questions and gave us materials to bring home. She followed up by asking questions online to see if I had any more questions, which was good. We were looking at larger units, so we saw a two-bedroom unit. The second bedroom was kind of small, but it's an older building and I think the older buildings don't have as large units. They also have parking for people that still have cars. One of the things about The Stratford is that the places are condominiums. So you buy a unit as if you're living in a condominium, so it's a different model. Most of them, you're renting a room by the month, and you pay an entrance fee. Whereas at The Stratford, you own the unit, and you pay a condominium fee like you would in a condominium building. Some people might like that, but we didn't really like that model. The location is very good because it's across from a city park. The ambiance of the area is quite good."

"My mother is with Aldersly. They offer many activities for residents and provide services. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. It's a totally different living environment than what I'm used to, but the room sizes were plenty for my mother. They have workout areas for the retirement community. Of course, they're very different from the workout gyms that people my age would use. Their dining facilities are very nice, and they have excellent cooks. I think it provides good service and good living facilities for the money, so we're satisfied. We have no complaints about the financial situation."

"My mom has moved into Sunrise of San Mateo. The layout is nice. They're not big, which is good for us. A lot of places are big, but that would be hard for her to access and there'd be confusion. So the size is perfect for her. I believe that everyone who works there that I've come in contact with is there because they want to be and not because they need a paycheck. They're very professional and they are very caring, and that seems sort of cheesy and cliché-ish, but it's just a fact. My mom likes meals with friends, and there are movies in the evening that she enjoys. Each night they have a movie. She likes hanging out and watching others, too. My mom said the food has been good. Looking at the activities in general, there's something for everybody. They go out and walk (but that doesn't suit her because it's hard for her to walk). They play like a game every afternoon. It's very scheduled and everybody knows exactly what to expect. If we're looking as a whole, it's very expensive, but all of them are very expensive. And I feel like she's getting a good value."

"I saw Heritage on the Marina for the fourth time now. It’s a three-tiered community with independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing. I like the cleanliness, the friendliness, the knowledgeability, the quality, and the payment structure of the whole place. They don’t have any rooms to be seen available right now because they are refurbishing. "
