"It was more homey for my mother-in-law. The people were more welcoming. The residents that were there were very friendly. It's an older building. It's a little less expensive because you're not paying for all the modern looks. They have activities and meals. There are three floors, and each floor has four caregivers, so if one of the patients needs something, they're right there. They have all the appliances. The staff member was fantastic. There wasn't a question that we asked her that she didn't answer. She was very upfront and helpful. Their activity room was kind of in disarray. They're doing some kind of Disney feature, so it was a wreck. If it didn't have the sign out front, you would think it was an apartment building."

"My friend has been at Sunflower Springs at Indian Land. I think it's an amazing community. It has been a godsend. It's in assisted living, but it's more like a family. The people that are living there have issues and things of that nature, and they help them with whatever they need done. It's more of a nursing home, yet it's not. They have their own lives, and they can do whatever they want to do and go wherever they want to go. It's just an amazing place. They go over and above what they have to do. Everyone just works together, and it's just a beautiful community. I've never been around in assisted living before, but this is the top. Even when you walk in the place it's a sunny and happy place. My friend is one who is very particular about her food, and everywhere she goes she says, "I hate the food," but she really likes the food there. It's a brand-new building. They have different activities that go on throughout the week. On Saturdays and Sundays families can come and visit the residents. They also have people that come in and sing. When they need to go to the doctor's office they take them to the doctor or whatever appointments that they have. It really takes the burden off of me because she's in a wheelchair."

"My uncle and aunt moved into The Blake at Edgewater. We chose it because of locality, and they handle memory care. Most places in North Carolina would not allow my aunt who is a dementia patient and my uncle who has no problems at 95 years old to be in the same room or unit together, but in South Carolina, that is allowed. The food I had was fantastic. The staff I've met all seemed to be sharp. They cook all his meals. They have a big wide screen TV and they play all kinds of games on the TV and do exercises and anything to occupy them. My uncle takes my aunt out of their room and go downstairs and put her in the memory care room. There were 17 people in the memory care room doing games and activities. The chef was great, and my uncle is eating well. The price is very reasonable."

"I really like the people at Spring Oak York, and it seems more like a retirement home than it does a nursing home type facility. I really like the way it's laid out and so forth. It was extremely nice as far as appearances go, and the rooms were large enough to accommodate a small apartment-type kitchenette, a bathroom, and so forth. I just like the fact that it was really more of a hotel-type environment. It was just very pleasant for me. The staff member who took me on a tour was extremely pleasant. She called back several times to see how my progress is going towards surgery, and she seems to be very caring and concerned. One of the things I like is that they have a rehab facility that you could use with the staff. They have a doctor who would visit twice a week to check up on you. The facility was extremely pleasant. There was a very nice dining room. It was extremely clean. I met a couple of the owners briefly to say hello. It was just a very pleasant experience."

"The Meridian at Carolina Lakes was the first facility I went to. It is absolutely gorgeous. I walked in and said I wanted to move. It's beautiful. They have a variety of rooms. So you have the studio, the one-bedroom, and the two-bedroom. Everybody was very welcoming. I spoke with Kayla, the director, the concierge girl, and a couple of the med techs that we just shared pleasantries with. They were all very kind, and they looked pleasant and happy to work there. My only concern is it's so big, it's three floors, and has, I think, 100 units. It's so fancy and it is more expensive than the other place."

"We chose CoHomes for my mother. They have CNAs caregivers there. It is small. They only have a maximum of six people at one time. I would call it a boutique home, warm, and inviting. They are taken very great care of. She's happy. There's consistency because they only have a small number of caregivers that are rotating in and out, so they get to know them. It feels more like a family setting and a home. The staff is fine, caring, nurturing. For her and for me they're accessible and they communicate with me. They prepare home-cooked meals, and my mom says they're very good cooks. They have activities every day. She can't see. The other ladies that can see do adult coloring books and draw pictures. They do a lot of activities, and they include my mom by talking with her as they're doing it, but she can't see to do those types of things. They'll play music. They watch TV together. It's more like a family setting. It is less expensive than the larger facility, and she's getting more one-on-one care and encouragement. There is more one-on-one time, and she's not just left in her room."

"It was very nice. The room was very nice, very bright, and it seemed bigger than some of the other ones. It was a smaller community, not as many residents, but the age of the population was older than what we were looking for. My husband is only 53, so we were looking for something that had some people that were either in their 50's or early 60's. It just wasn't the right fit for us. It had a very good feel; it seemed that everybody there enjoyed being there and working there. The day that we visited, they were having staff appreciation, and they had a red-carpet theme, so they had the red-carpet and snacks -- just kind of a lot going on. You are like pleasantly surprised from what the outside looks like when you go in. The inside is just totally different than what you see; "you can't read a book by its cover" is the best way to describe this one. It was lovely inside, and the people were lovely. "

"I visited The Pines on Carmel. I like that they had on-staff physical therapy and occupational therapy. They had social gatherings. They do things for the family and the members there on holidays, like Fourth of July, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. I also like that they are able to help with the patients, such as taking them on outings and errands. They provide three meals a day. I wish that sometime in the future that they are able to have breakfast or lunch in the table area outside. They have to provide some shading for that to happen, though. The staff were very helpful, informative, and pleasant to talk to. The facility was very clean, very nice, up-to-date, and well-kept."

"Brookdale South Charlotte was a very nice facility. The staff was very friendly. The residents in the memory care unit itself seemed very happy. It's very clean in appearance. The rooms were nice, but small. They have a lot of class, and they encourage the people to come out of their rooms and participate in the group events. I didn't see a list of things they did, but the staff talked about the activities. I spoke with the director of the memory care unit. I saw them rolling the food in for the residents, and it's very well prepared and looked very good."

"I already knew some of the residents and some of the people there at Brighton Gardens that managed it and operated it. The staff is excellent and well trained. They know their job, and they do their job. They do it happily, friendly, and efficiently. That's all that you can ask. The food is excellent and top-level. It is well done, well prepared, and served very nicely. It is top rate like five stars. They have a daily and weekly sheet that they put out for a lot of different activities that they do. They put out a sheet whether it's for bingo or an event on the mall or tickets to a show; you just sign up for those activities. They have an activities director that does that for fun. The rooms are big enough. They are clean, refreshed, and all ready to go. They fairly wash down everything when someone leaves or moves on. Everything works. They occasionally have fire drills so they know how to orderly get out of there. They don't just post it, they do it, and I thought that was nice. The place is very much secured. The doors are automatic to an extent, but at evening hours, they have a special passcode for residents to get in. "

"This place is fantastic. Very homey with an excellent staff. My father spent his last few months of life at The Post and we could not have been happier with his care and comfort there. Music plays a lot. All of the residents have their own recliners in the family room. A chef brings in meals every day so it always smells amazing at The Post. The staff loves the residents and they very much enjoy family and friends coming to visit. The rooms are large and very comfortable. I am so grateful that we found The Post and that my dad was able to be in such an amazing environment at the end. After he passed away, I stopped by to bring some flowers and visit with the staff/residents whom I came to love with my regular visits. The Post is unmatched to any place else we visited while searching for the perfect place for my sweet dad. "
