Riverdale is a city in Clayton County, about 20 minutes south of downtown Atlanta, with a population of around 15,100, 10% of whom are aged 65 and older. Its sparse population provides a rural feel, despite the proximity of Georgia’s largest city. Riverdale’s other appealing aspects include its low cost of living, senior-friendly climate and free door-to-door transportation for older residents. There are also numerous parks in the area and plenty of shops and restaurants for seniors who enjoy retail therapy and dining with friends.
Assisted living is a great choice for seniors increasingly challenged by some aspects of daily life, such as cleaning their homes and making meals. The communities offer attractive accommodation kept clean by housekeepers and restaurant-style dining prepared by chefs, with many providing laundry services too. Although costs vary between communities, the average monthly fee for Riverdale is $4,000, which is about $500 over the state average and $300 below the national average.
This guide covers the costs of assisted living in more detail, including the costs of other types of senior care. Additionally, it considers the advantages and disadvantages of living in Riverdale and lists some resources for the city’s seniors.

I visited Country Gardens Senior Living. It’s small, and it seemed like they give personalized care. The person I met was well informed and very willing to work with us. The bedroom was good, and everything was clean. I would say it’s average sized.
They had average amenities for seniors who need assisted living. I presume they have an activities coordinator. When it was safe, and when it opens up to be safe, they take the seniors on various trips and try to keep them engaged and active. When we visited on behalf of our father, we thought they they would deliver that service.
The environment was calm. It seemed like people had autonomy and they could be engaged at whatever level they wanted to be. Some people were in the activity rooms, and some were not.

What I like best about Benton Village of Stockbridge is its location. What I like least is that there are floors, so you might end up having to take a unit on a floor where you’d have to take an elevator to get up and down from your room, or from your room to where you dine or whatever. I prefer the facilities that have ground-level accommodations and resident quarters.
We were looking for assisted living, but I’m not sure if they separate the care because everything blends seamlessly. I don’t know if they have memory care on another floor, because they allow the residence to move and travel throughout the facility.
We had an appointment and the staff member was on time, and they were very professional. They offered us food. We were there during a time where they were finishing up meals, and everything seemed very nice. We did not try the food. I think they had clam chowder or something.
Some of the amenities and areas there weren’t as nice as the others. It was very clean. I actually live next to Stockbridge, so if we needed to check on my mom or do anything, then it would be in close proximity. It’s also near an emergency hospital, shopping, and restaurants. It’s also easy to get to.

I went to Heartis Fayetteville. It was OK. It was just more kind of a middle class look; there was nothing wrong with it. Unfortunately, I had heard that it’s had a couple of major management changeovers in a short amount of time, and that bothered me. It’s only been here a couple of years, and already had that much of a changeover. I will say to you that I found it offensive that on one of their forms (because he did hand me the packet in case he wanted to go forward, that for my mother, who’s 90 years old), they wanted to run a background check to make sure she wasn’t a sex offender. I was honestly appalled by that. I think that is unnecessary.

We have decided on Oaks at Fayetteville. My mother-in-law will be moving into their assisted living. We like pretty much everything about it. We spoke to a lot of people who work there. We like their professionalism. Everybody seems to be having fun. We also talked to some of the residents there, and one happened to be a former member of the CIA, and she had been living there for about 11 years, and she loved it. We like the activities. They are not too exorbitant. We’ve seen some other places where they were overly hyped. I really had no complaints about this place. The food was great. We even sampled the food. Unfortunately, my mother-in-law smokes, and they even have a smoking place that would not be too far down the hall from her room. They have a lot of different games and things like that, especially bingo, and it’s probably the only game that my mother-in-law, she likes loves bingo. She hasn’t played for quite some time, so she’s going to enjoy that.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Riverdale
Healthcare Facility Licensure — a division of the Georgia Department of Community Health — inspects, monitors and licenses assisted living facilities across the state. It also investigates complaints about facilities and assesses and certifies those eligible to accept Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Riverdale
- According to data published by Sperling’s Best Places, Riverdale has an average cost of living index of 88.2, making it a more affordable city than average in Georgia, which has an index of 93.4, and the country, with an index of 100. Seniors may also be interested to know that the city’s average health costs index is below the state and national averages too.
- Riverdale’s crime statistics do not make good reading, particularly those for property crime, which is significantly more common than average for the state and the country. Violent crime isn’t as much of a problem, although still a little above average. Generally speaking, the neighborhoods to the east and south experience less crime. Additionally, seniors in assisted living communities are often under the watchful eyes of security cameras and staff 24 hours a day.
- Clayton County Communication Services Authority operates a free transportation service for seniors and the disabled. To qualify, the rider must be enrolled in one of several eligible programs, such as the Senior Citizens Program. The service uses several types of buses and vans, many of which are equipped for wheelchair users.
- Riverdale’s climate is good for seniors. Snowfall isn’t common and rarely rises above 2 inches a year and the city’s sunny days are typically nine more than the national average of 205. Although January is the coldest month, the average temperature is a cool 33 degrees while July frequently sees the dial at a warm 90 degrees. Rainfall is above average, but it’s also the cause of the city’s green and pleasant landscape.
- The primary medical facility in Riverdale is the Southern Regional Medical Center, while nearby Atlanta is home to some of the best hospitals in the state. There are also a significant number of Medicare-registered physicians working in a diverse range of fields, such as family medicine, orthopedic surgery, internal medicine and psychiatry.
Paying for Assisted Living in Riverdale
According to the 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the average fee for a semiprivate room in a Riverdale nursing home is $4,000 per month. This is around $500 more than average for Georgia, although $300 per month below the fee paid by the typical American senior.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Although Riverdale’s typical fee is above the state average, it’s not the most costly in the region. In Gainesville, seniors can expect to pay around $4,263 per month for services similar to their peers further south. However, there are more affordable cities too, such as Rome, at $3,088, and Athens, at $3,366.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Generally speaking, senior care fees reflect the level of care and the provider’s costs, which is why adult day care is the most affordable option at $1,300. Home care services are possible for around $4,147, with an additional $48 per month getting basic medical care too. At $4,000, assisted living provides accommodation and basic medical support, while nursing homes charge the highest fees for intensive medical care — typically $6,950 for a semiprivate room and another $609 for the benefits of private accommodation.

Free Assisted Living Resources in Riverdale
Clayton County’s seniors benefit from various resources aimed at enhancing their quality of life and supporting them when they need it. The following examples show how seniors can get fresh meals delivered to their homes, help if in dispute with their care provider and information on a number of state and federal benefits.
The Clayton County Aging Program can assist Riverdale's seniors in several ways. For example, residents who cannot cook their own meals and don't have someone to help on a regular basis can have freshly prepared meals delivered to their homes five days a week. Utilizing the services of MLB Transportation, it can also arrange low-cost and free transportation.
The Frank Bailey Senior Center is the primary meeting place for Riverdale's older residents. It's a place where they can socialize, exercise and participate in a range of life-enhancing educational programs. There's also an indoor heated therapy pool and regular performances of plays and variety shows organized by the center's staff and members. Every morning and afternoon on weekdays, there's also the opportunity to have breakfast with friends in the center's cafeteria and lunch in its dining room.
The Georgia Department of Veterans Service provides information, advice and support to those who served their country, their spouses and dependents. Most often, this involves helping them identify and claim for the local, state and federal benefits to which they're entitled. Additionally, it may also be able to help seniors in assisted living access the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which can cover some of their monthly costs, and the Housebound Allowance for seniors still able to reside at home but in need of home care services.
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman is a state-sponsored resource for seniors residing in care communities throughout Georgia. The ombudsman's services are free and typically include investigating complaints made by residents, their loved ones and third parties. At all times the ombudsman is an advocate for the senior. Additional services include supplying copies of inspection reports to seniors comparing assisted living communities in Clayton County for their long-term care needs.
Assisted Living Laws and Regulations in Riverdale
Riverdale-area assisted living communities must adhere to the comprehensive set of state laws and regulations that all assisted living communities in Georgia are required to follow. Visit our Assisted Living in Georgia page for more information about these laws.
