"I have already referred several friends to your agency, and will again. I liked that our needs and requirements were heard when we initially signed on with you. You sent us quality people, who were professional and very caring. While my Mother was hesitant with this arrangement at first (seniors are often wary of new things at first), she grew to look forward to seeing them everyday. Their kindness and concern for her really added to her quality of life over the last year. "

"Following recent foot surgery I was 'non-weightbearing' for 6+ weeks. A Place At Home provided excellent in home care for me. The caregiver was prompt, patient, knowledgeable and very helpful. Initially she provided 24/7 care. The services included personal care, grocery shopping, laundry, meal prep, doctor's visits and more. Once I was able to manage better we switched to day care services. I was very pleased with the company and recommend their services! Thank you APAH"

"We have had Home Instead for the care of our elderly, blind mother for three years. Home Instead found the perfect match of a caregiver for our our Mom in 2018. We began with limited hours and days per week and as time progressed the primary caregiver developed a bond with our mother. We had other Home Instead caregivers to "fill in " the schedule through weekends and unexpected circumstances. All the personnel were well qualified and deeply committed to the best care for our mother. Now, as Mom moves into assisted living, we continue to have close contact with her primary caregiver. We are grateful for the entire Home Instead experience and we would highly recommend their in home care. "

"My father required full-time care at home during the last month of his life. After having a bad experience with another agency, I contacted Home Instead. I would recommend this service to anyone, but especially those living within Philadelphia city limits. They are located in Center City and the owner of the franchise, Steve L., does the intake. He came to the hospital to meet us and spent forty minutes getting the information he needed to put us together with appropriate home care aids. We were assigned the same carers night after night, which made a huge difference to my father's comfort. They were professional, reliable, caring and kind, and my father looked forward to seeing each of them. They arrived on foot or by public transportation -- so no parking or traffic issues -- and were always ahead of their scheduled time in order to be updated by the carer who preceded them. This insured seamless shift changes. The agency has a nurse on staff who came by whenever a carer had concerns about my father's condition. The staff always checked with me in advance about personnel or schedule changes and when new carers were added to the daytime schedule they came early for training and an introduction. I really can't say enough good things about this agency. They thought of everything. "

Jill, the service manager, was immediately on board with scheduling competent caregivers to help care for my mom living in an AS facility. Her timeliness and great communication between the caregivers and me provided the information I needed to communicate with the medical professionals caring for her when I could not be there. "I've been using home health care agencies for various family members for years, with not great results. I am so relieved to have found Nurse Partners. Angie has provided my family with aides for both my developmentally disabled, mentally ill sister and my father, who has the early states of dementia. Both Brenda and Ruthsa where professional, lovely, and patient and were never condescending towards my sister or Dad. Their compassion was always obvious, and they were also communicative with me. Angie and her staff are equally communicative and try to accommodate any needs our family had. "

"My caregiver is for my father who has dementia. He needs someone with him when I work. My dad is very important to me and I wanted someone who would not only take care of his everyday needs but could relate to him and treat with him dignity. Both concerns are no longer a concern. Our caregiver is aware of any physical issues that need to be conveyed to me. She respects my concerns such as what to let him watch on TV since he confuses some things and becomes upset. I was also concerned about someone being in my house - my dad lives with us. Our boundaries are respected. "

"They take great care of my mother. They provide 24 hour care. Each and every one of the care takers are very friendly, understanding and very punctual! The care takers are constantly helping around the apartment , taking out trash wiping down surfaces etc. They take the current Covid 19 situation VERY seriously, always wearing masks and gloves and wiping all contact areas. When we have scheduling issues, they always always adjust there schedule or find someone to fill the spot as needed. My mother is very happy with every caretaker they supply. If any problems arise, they are always in contact with me so I know what's going on. The management team is terrific as well, ALWAYS available and always able to assist. All the employees we deal with are always happy, That shows me that the management team treats them well"

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Media:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| County Office of Services for the Aging | (610) 490-1300 | 1510 Chester Pike, Suite 250, Eddystone, PA 19022 | COSA is the designated Area Agency on Aging for Delaware County and helps administer government services for residents 60 years of age and older. The office aims to help seniors avoid placement in nursing homes by connecting them with resources that can help them age in place for as long as possible, with its work particularly focusing on the needs of the socially isolated or economically disadvantaged. |
| Surrey Services | (610) 566-0505 | 302 S. Jackson Street, Media, PA 19063 | This community-based nonprofit organization serves the needs of Media seniors through an array of programs that provide social, educational and fitness opportunities. Low-impact Gentle Stretch classes are held three times a week, with yoga and tai chi available for more active seniors. Bingo games and trivia contests give participants a chance to enjoy some friendly competition. Surrey Services volunteers and staff also place phone calls to homebound seniors to check in and provide social connections. |
| Senior Victim Services | (610) 627-2292 | 20 S. Olive Street, Suite 303 Media, PA 19063-3228 | This branch of the Delaware County district attorney’s office works to support the rights of senior crime victims in the area. Seniors 55 years and up can contact Senior Victim Services for counseling, guidance and assistance, including accompaniment to court appearances if they have been a victim of a crime. Concerned third parties can also file a report with the department on behalf of a senior who they believe to be a victim or at risk of becoming a victim of crime. |
| Meals on Wheels | (610) 566-4211 | 301 Meetinghouse Ln, Media, PA 19063 | Volunteers from this nonprofit organization deliver meals to seniors who are unable to leave their homes or prepare food for themselves. Every weekday, participants can receive one hot meal and one cold meal intended for refrigeration. While each meal carries a suggested donation, payment for the service is not mandatory. |
| PENNDOT | (717) 783-8025 | Bureau of Public Transportation, 400 North St., Seventh Floor, P.O. Box 3151, Harrisburg, PA 17105-3151 | The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation maintains two major initiatives that help state residents 65 years of age and older get around their local areas. The first provides no-cost rides on local public transit; the second is a shared-ride program that allows seniors to set up curb-to-curb transportation at a significantly reduced fare of 15%. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
