"We've been using Right at Home Central Missouri for five weeks for my grandfather. He seems happy. He's had no complaints. It's the same person each day. They do meal prep for him, they do housework, and they get his groceries for him. It's automatic billing. It comes out once a week on Fridays. Value for money is good."

"My sister was diagnosed with a terminal condition and in early 2024 we could not provide everything she needed. So we hired Brightstar to come mornings to get her up, dressed, help with her PT, and other issues. We also had someone come at night to help put her to bed. And when we needed a break they did 24 hour coverage as she could not be left alone. We were very, very pleased with them. What impressed me most was when something happened that we were not that pleased with they reacted immediately and resolved the situation so it wouldn't happen again. They were professional, caring and developed good relationships with my sister so she felt they were her friends. Thank you Brightstar for making my sister's last months on earth safe and comfortable. JME"

"We are just starting our second week with Visiting Angels, and it's going pretty well right now. The aide is very good, very prompt, and very thorough. She takes time to be with my mother-in-law and does her paperwork afterwards. She's able to help with showers and things like that, too. The communication is also good, and we have everything we need right now. I think she's been a good match for her, but I'm not sure if it's the best match."

"I found the professionals who came in initially to evaluate my situation were knowledgeable, thorough in their assessment and polite. However, my primary complaint as time went on was the constant changing of the actual care-givers who came to my home. Also, in the main office, the right hand never seemed to know what the left hand was doing when I would inquire about the staffing issues that impacted me. I truly hate to make any negative remarks as there were some lovely individuals I met along the way; however, I definitely would not call this company first, should I have a future need for in-home care, as I don't think they have their act together just yet. "Home Helpers has cared for my father for five years now. I could not have found a better company. The staff with home helpers exceeds my expectations above and beyond and they are so professional. They should be your first choice if your looking for a kind, caring, compassionate care giver. I have to travel with my job and cannot always be there for my father and I can call them on short notice and they have me covered. "

"The services Homemaker Health Care provide and my husband's home health aide who comes in is excellent. His LPN who comes once a week to check in because he is diabetic is very good and knowledgeable. I myself work in health care field for 30 years, so I kind of know how things are supposed to go. They actually came to our home and interview my husband. His deterioration has leveled off a bit, so I don't think that there's anything in addition to what they're doing now that would be of any help to him. "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Columbia:
Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
---|---|---|---|
Utility Assistance CASH Program | (573) 817-6430 | 1005 W. Worley Street, Columbia, MO 65203 | The Division of Human Services for Boone County manages a utility assistance service that includes the CASH Program. This specific initiative offers a subsidy on utility payments for low-income senior citizens under certain conditions and eligibility requirements. Seniors applying for the program must be residents of Boone County and U.S citizens, permanent residents or formal refugees. Seniors must also have an income that’s at or no higher than 150% of the official Federal Poverty Level. |
SIL-Columbia: Aging In Place/Senior Services Program | (573) 874-6430 | 1401 Hathman Place, Columbia, MO 65201 | The Aging in Place/Senior Services program is managed by the Columbia branch of Services for Independent Living, which is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to assisting the elderly, disabled and veterans. The assistance is available to residents of Columbia and Boone County who are 55 or older and includes a carrier alert service by which mail delivery personnel will alert SIL for a wellness check if they note mail piling up at the address of an enrolled senior. The program also includes weekly one-hour friendship visitations by volunteers, monthly grocery delivery, property tax refund filing and minor home and accessibility ramp repairs for seniors. |
Central Missouri Area Agency on Aging | (573) 443-5823 | 1121 Business Loop 70 East, Suite 2A, Columbia, MO 65201 | The Columbia branch of the Central Missouri Area Agency on Aging offers support to seniors in the Columbia area. Assistance includes information on available services for seniors, mobility assistance programs, meal planning and respite care guidance. It also offers individual counseling and support group services to seniors and training programs for caregivers. |
Central Missouri Community Action – Foster Grandparents Program | (573) 443-8706 ext 1131 | 807 North Providence, Columbia MO 65203 | The Foster Grandparent Program is run by the CMCA as an outreach service to seniors who want to interact with children in their community. It offers seniors volunteer work at nonprofit day care centers, state-sponsored facilities, schools and private homes. Much of the volunteer work is directed at helping children with special needs. The program is open to retired men and women who are 55 or older and undertake a formal physical exam showing that they’re able to participate. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
