Lakeville gets its name from the numerous lakes and bogs that surround the town, such as the Massasoit State Park and Assawompset Pond, both of which offer easy access and very senior-friendly opportunities to hike, bike and fish in safe outdoor environments. Seniors are 15% of Lakeville’s population of nearly 12,000 residents, many of them living at home and spending time out in the community. Warm, mild summers, when the average daily high temperatures touch the low 80s, plus a crime rate that’s barely one-third the national average, encourage seniors to get outdoors and take active roles in the community this medium-sized suburb of Boston has cultivated since its founding in 1717. The local cost of living is high relative to national averages, roughly 42% above the rest of the country, though seniors in Lakeville can expect to pay up to 16% less than the national average for excellent senior healthcare at local facilities such as Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.

Lakeville seniors pay significantly more per month for in-home assistance than the national average, according to the 2019 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. The survey reports that the average cost of home health aides in Lakeville is $5,482 a month, and the cost of homemaker services averages $5,434. Seniors nationwide pay $4,290 for homemaker services and $4,385 for a home health aide.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Lakeville, so data for the closest city, Boston, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Lakeville area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Lakeville Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Lakeville:

Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

Address: 100 Cambridge St., Suite 300, Boston, MA 02114
Phone: (617) 573-1100

Seniors who own a home in Lakeville can get assistance preparing their house for the winter with free inspections and weatherization work done by local contractors through the Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). This program is open to Lakeville seniors whose income and assets meet program maximums, and who meet the WAP’s residency requirements. Program benefits can be used to upgrade or to install new insulation, as well as energy-efficient windows and doors. All repair and upgrade work must be approved by WAP prior to authorization.

Home Modification Loan Program (HMLP)

Address: 600 Washington St., Boston, MA 02111
Phone: (617) 204-3600

Senior homeowners in Lakeville may be able to get financial assistance in making necessary upgrades to their homes’ safety and accessibility through the Commonwealth’s Home Modification Loan Program (HMLP). This state-level benefit is administered on the level of Plymouth County, and it is open to all seniors who meet the income and asset threshold, and who have been unable to obtain a traditional home improvement loan. HMLP secures 0% loans for senior homeowners through a local network of participating lenders, who may impose their own requirements before writing a home improvement loan.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Address: 100 Cambridge St., Suite 300, Boston, MA 02114
Phone: (617) 573-1100

Seniors who struggle to pay monthly utility bills may qualify for up to a 30% discount by signing up for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which in Massachusetts is also known as the Fuel Assistance Program. In addition to reducing the cost of home heating and cooling, LIHEAP can also help seniors find and obtain energy-efficient appliances and improved or upgraded insulation and weather stripping. LIHEAP may also be able to make a one-time cash payment to cover overdue bills and prevent disconnections on an emergency basis. Seniors must provide proof of residency, income and assets prior to program approval.

Family Caregiver Support Program

Address: One Ashburton Pl., Floor 5, Boston, MA 02108
Phone: (617) 727-7750

The Family Caregiver Support Program pays the cost of having an in-home caregiver for many Lakeville seniors aged 55 and over. The program also supports seniors raising grandchildren with help obtaining benefits and education resources for the children.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
