I called and they came to our house and answered questions. My father didn’t want help showering but he needed it so he wouldn’t fall again and get hurt. The caregivers are nice and know what they are doing. Father and mom liked the errands and help they do around the house. Joyce makes their meals most of the time and has extra sandwiches in the fridge for later. They tell friends that the caregivers do laundry and chores so they don’t have to do them anymore. This really worked great for our family. I recommend them.

My 100-year-old aunt has been using LifeStyle Options Inc for six years now. She lives in an independent living facility and this organization has an office right there in the building, but I’m not overly impressed with them. They get her to the bathroom, get her cleaned up, make her meals, and keep track of her from trying to walk on her own and falling. There’s no consistency with the caregiver because they rotate. She’ll have somebody who’s really good one day and somebody who’s terrible the next day. They’re on-site, so they’re pretty responsive.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Algonquin, IL
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Selecting a home care agency is an important decision that needs careful consideration. Seniors and their family members should search for a provider offering transparent pricing along with written confirmation of services. A good agency has a robust process of selecting caregivers, including a full background check and provides them with full training. Caregivers need to have a supervisor to answer to. Additionally, online reviews are a good way to initially gauge if a specific agency is a good fit for the senior’s needs.

Plans include a list of tasks a caregiver completes while in the senior’s home, which is often agreed upon during an initial assessment. Plans can also include help with daily living tasks such as bathing and dressing. The home care agency will tailor a plan based on the client’s requirements and adjust it as time goes on.
What is a non-medical home care service?
Home care agencies offer a type of care that excludes medical services which should be provided by a qualified nurse. Non-medical care includes companionship and personal care services. Seniors can receive help fulfilling day-to-day tasks such as walking, preparing their meals and running errands.
