It seems to be the appropriate fit for my mom. Her room is very nice, and I'm very happy that I was able to place her there in the memory care. There was a waiting list, and I was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time in the waiting line. The staff is wonderful and the dining area too. They have exercise groups and crafts.

I like the homey feel of AvilaCare Memory Care of Lewisville. The ratio of patients per staff was nice. However, there was not a big outdoor space. The rooms were adequate. They were not excessively large or small. They do not provide transport though. You have to arrange your own for your loved ones where the other place has transport. The previous owner was helping them get established and was doing the marketing and leading the tour, but the new owner's brother (who's going to be running the one down here) was there also and doing it, so with them changing companies, you don't know how it's going to continue. The dining area is kind of a large area. When we were there, they had a gentleman who was leading a sing-along thing, and the members were there in the dining room doing it. The tables were wood, but it was like a natural wood grain thick slab type, and they were quite pretty. The kitchen is in the center area, and they cook breakfast for everyone. The place was just bought, and so they were painting and doing things right then, giving everything a fresh coat. It looked nice.

AvilaCare Memory Care of Lewisville is a big house and they only had 16 people. The people that we met were just sweet and funny. It's an old house, but it was clean and it didn't smell like the clients weren't being taken care of. We had an appointment, so we knocked on the door. They let us in. They had no idea that we were coming. The nurse there was very sweet. She called the owner and apparently, he had just sold it, so she said, "You can call him directly" and I thought, there's nothing to call because it's such a small place, that I saw everything that we needed to see. It's really more towards the end-of-life thing for them. I was disappointed that the owner didn't show up. We liked the woman that showed us the place. She'd been there for a while. Apparently, they don't have a high turnover in staff, which is important to me. The patients all looked clean. It's not a new place and it's not fancy. Their stages were more advanced than what we saw over at the other place. It was a different world. Because of the people with Alzheimer's or dementia, they do crafts. They don't take them out anywhere. They might let them stay on the porch for a while if they're not mobile. They are directly across the street from Medical City in Lewisville. There's a restaurant. I asked a question "Do you get a van and take them out?" The staff says no, their clients are not able to. When we walked in, there was a bunch of ladies who wanted to hold our hands and kiss us and they're just watching TV. They were just so different. There was no gym because that's not what they're there for. They were there to be cared for. No one was wandering around. There was no place to get your hair done. If something happens, the EMT could walk across the street and get someone to help them.

I liked that it was very intimate. I toured the memory care and it was very cozy, more like a home, versus like a facility. They had activities. The staff was very well versed and caring. It's an older facility, but it was quaint and well kept.
