I toured Hedgewood Home for Adults. The place was highly institutionalized. The room they showed me was a small box room and not impressive at all. It was directly adjacent to the general population. Nita was very pleasant, personable, and thrilled to see my father. I have no problem with her. I saw the residents lined up for their lunch in the hallway outside my father's room that they showed me, which made it loud and boisterous.

It’s dated, but you can tell they’re making improvements. The residents are friendly. You have a mixed bag of people. The staff is friendly. Food looked delicious and place was very clean. Overall a clean affordable assisted living. Activities seemed to be a hit there also. I saw people playing board games, some were out fishing , it’s in a nice area with lots of shops to visit. The rooms were double or single. They were each made up to that residents preference. It’s not a nursing home so don’t expect nurses all over but they do have aides, and there are nurses and a dr downstairs if needed. Not everyone can afford the Taj Mahal, and this place offers the essentials w compassion , cleanliness and affordability.

Food had small portions. Residents are heavy smokers and one resident begged for money.

When I visited Hedgewood Home for Adults, it seemed there was not that much staff around taking care of people. It just wasn't the right place for my mother. The staff who assisted me was very friendly, she was very thorough with the tour, as far as that goes. The dining facility looked pretty nice. They had the tables set up nicely. The dining facility was probably the highlight of the place as far as I'm concerned. After looking at it, that was the only thing that impressed me. Even where my mom's at now is nicer, and way better for her than they would be. The lady who showed us around was certainly helpful, very nice, and was willing to help us out with getting my mother in there if that was the way we were going to go. She was very nice and very helpful. It wasn't her in general. It was just the facility itself and the people there. I don't want to trash the place because I'm sure it's okay for certain people, but it just wasn't right for us.

I am a local business and have filed numerous complaints regarding the residents of this facility. One resident has set up a sleeping bag behind our building and I have security footage of him arriving at 12:30am to spend the night. He is there in rain or shine and I fear for him as the weather gets colder. Another resident came with his walker and in hospital garb and sat outside yelling at customers. I called the police and they said they are getting 3-4 calls a week lately. I have filed with Department of Health and called the Justice Center as well. I am at the end of my rope with paying to clean up the mess these residents leave. How bad must the conditions be, if they prefer to sleep on the streets! Clean up your facility and treat these people with dignity.

To be honest, Hedgewood is a sort of local joke amongst the residents of Beacon. The stigma surrounding it outweighs any positives. The center allows for mentally ill individuals to basically roam free on the streets, urinating in public places and disrupting local businesses on a constant basis. The residents have been found sleeping on people's front lawns, and in their basements. Some individuals have been known to rant to invisible listeners about flying saucers and alien abductions. Others yell obscenities at children on their way home from school. It is a shame that these individuals are not receiving the treatment they deserve or need. When I visited the site, I realized that the inside was just as bad as expected. The facility is run-down, with little staff attention given to residents. The food looks awful (I did not taste it, fortunately), and the living quarters are depressing. In all honesty, I don't understand why this place isn't shut down. The grounds are in severe need of maintenance, and the whole place has an odd odor. I wouldn't wish a stay here on my worst enemy.
