I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Our mother has been at St. Gertrude's for over two years. There are serious issues regarding the quality of her care. The dining room is small and crowded, and doubles as an activity room. It is difficult to walk through the room at meal time, due to the wheelchair bound residents and how inappropriately small the room is for a facility with 100 beds. Most of the residents are left confined to their rooms for most of the day, as a result. There is a staff shortage and sometimes no activities on the weekend.

My brother was in Hospice for 90 days. He passed away at the end of February 2024. He received excellent care. It was clean, positive and caring experience. Staff was great and Allina hospice team was great. The respect and care my brother received was excellent. I would recommend Saint Gertrudes.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother is a resident in the rehab at St. Gertrude's. She has been in the rehab for over two months now. For the short time she has been here, the staff has been compassionate and friendly to the residents and relatives of residents/visitors. Even though St. Gertrude's is short staffed like other nursing homes, the staff here has worked hard on trying to meet the residents' needs as best they can. It's quite a challenge for all staff to keep up with all residents' daily issues. The rooms are clean and the whole building is neat and clean. My interactions with the staff here has been positive. Our family decided to choose St. Gertrude's for our mother to be placed in long term care because we feel our mother will be safe and secure here. Good quality care means a lot to our family. So far I have seen staff do what they can for all the residents here. We appreciate their hard work.

Benedictine St. Gertrude's is horrible. My husband is there for rehab. I chose them because it's close to where our apartment is. I didn't pay attention to what type of facility it is and I assumed that they would be fine, but while he was there, he was getting COVID primarily because they didn't isolate the residents that first came down positive. The staff wasn't observing those residents in the room. On the 4th of July, my husband was sitting in a wheelchair and needed to go to the bathroom and no one was around. He stood up, his foot slipped out from under him, he fell, and hit his head on something. He ended up needing two staples. Then he also had a brain bleed. He was in the hospital for another five days. Then once he came back from that, he was a lot more confused and a lot more forgetful. It's an old building and not very well kept. The air conditioner in my husband's room isn't working. It's hot in there unless you have the room and the door open. I've told them about it, but they don't seem to be able to figure out how to get it working. Last night, I was there visiting my husband. It was 9:30 when he decided he wanted to go to bed and there was no gown or anything to put on him. So, I put the light on for somebody to come help, and then the nurse arrived 45 minutes later and said, "I'm waiting for the nursing assistant down the hall to come and help you." The care is just not good. The only thing that's nice about that place is the outdoor patio they have.

Was in rehabilitation part, rooms were small and dingy. Nurse calls aren’t answered in a reasonable time, especially when one can’t get out of bed on there own and has to go to the bathroom, hard to hold it if they do thanks answer the call light until 20 or 35 minutes later., chairs in room ma need to be replaced, they were filthy. I wouldn’t want to sit in it. Also if you need to contact the care center after 5pm, good luck get someone to answer the phones! I don’t see who they could possibly receive a 5 star rating from US News .

There are many things that can be improved upon here. The staff is very slow to respond to room calls. The staff puts on the TV loud on their TV stations in the main area and patients cannot converse with their visitors. The staff should not be watching TV when they are working. The rooms are dingy and need updating badly. Very poor lighting for anyone who wants to read. The reading light is on the opposite side of the bed as the chair. My husband was there for transitional care - he was given no goals he needed to pass in order to be released. We never knew how he was doing. Poor communication between staff and patients and their families.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother is pretty much taken care of at the St. Gertrudes Health Center. The staff is very kind and polite. It's more of a convalescence center, and to get you ready to come home. But she has emphysema and needs to go to an assisted living facility. They need to improve on communication between their patients and the nurses as regards medication.
