Assisted Living Communities in Grand Rapids, MN

"I didn't care for River Grand. The staff didn't seem as friendly and helpful. The place was beautiful. It's very, very elegant, with high ceilings. It's very modern, and just brand-new looking, but it wasn't as warm and friendly to me as the other places. It could be that they were just busy the day that I was there, because I had to wait quite a while for someone to talk to me and show me around. They just showed me one small little area, and they really didn't show me all the different parts of it. So I didn't feel good about that visit when I left. The staff member that showed me around was nice, but a little aloof. It just didn't seem like the right fit for us."

"My mother moved into The Emeralds at Grand Rapids about a month ago. She has Alzheimer's/dementia, but she's mentally "with it" sometimes, so we decided that the best safe place for her was to put her into an assisted living. She has her own apartment, but she can be with the community and have lunch out there with them. She's around a lot more people than she was before, and she's happy. This is one of the nicer ones my mom has seen. I like that they can get together in one area, talk to each other, and see other people. Her apartment is awesome and the perfect size for her. Everything in her old apartment fits in there. She didn't have to give anything up, and that was important to her. They can eat dinner together instead of her eating by herself, and they have activities that they do during the day to keep her occupied. I haven't been able to go over to take a tour because of COVID. I see her now for only a half an hour in the living area where people congregate, and that's something I don't like about it. I have to call forty-eight hours in advance to see my mother. Other than that, I can talk to her every day because she has her phone. I haven't seen her apartment because of COVID, but what I have seen was great and very clean. She said she likes the food."

"The grounds outside the facility appeared in good shape. Nice and clean. The grass was cut and the sidewalks were free of cracks and grass which made it easier for the elderly to propel their wheelchairs around the grounds. The staff were nice, but not very attentive. The workers seemed to be more interested in speaking to other non-elderly instead of addressing clients. The staff appeared clean and well kept. Some of the elderly residents needed personal needs assistance. One elderly person was soiled when we arrived and was soiled an hour later when we left. Some of the other residents were engaging in card games or puzzles and seemed quite happy. The facility itself appeared run down and had a foul odor. The walls certainly could use a good painting. The cafeteria area was pleasant and clean. The eating utensils appeared clean as well. The residents appeared to be well cared for physically, but some of them seemed unhappy. this could be due to their diagnosis.I would say that the overall experience was pleasant. "

"We toured Vista Prairie at Manor House, but my mom didn't like the big community; she found it intimidating. As a visitor, it was very nice, it was clean, and smelled wonderful. The people were friendly and the rooms were large. Some of them were a little older, but then they have a new wing, so they have availability. They have exercise classes, a movie area, a snack area, and they have an area for the family to entertain with the clients. They have an outdoor area with a garden and kind of an enclosed grounds down below. They have three levels and there's a beautiful dining room. The staff that we met was a little disorganized."

"Rooms are nice and clean . The staff is great. I see them playing bowling they read the pledge and say prayer before meals. Food is good. I often can eat with Mom . I get updates on her and she is happy there. She is always clean and her clothes are clean. She gets her hair fixed once a week. Always looks very nice. I'm so glad we have her there. "

"My father was at Home and Comfort for over three years. He had dementia. We were so happy with his care there and I can't say enough good things about this home-like facility. The staff were wonderful and caring. They met all of my dad's needs with considerateness and respect. I would highly recommend this hidden gem."
