The Best Memory Care Communities in Suffolk City County, VA

"My mother has moved into Chesapeake Place Senior Living. It's very nice. It's all on one level. The people are very open and seem to be very friendly. My mother hasn't been there that long, but they have activities, and they have PT and OT. The dining experience is very nice. They're all served based on what they like to eat as far as the dining is concerned. They have some outings. My mom has not been on any yet, but that's something to come. I think all of it works into a very nice package. In terms of activities, they've got everything from bingo to puzzles to music. Once a week they usually have somebody come in and actually play music, whether it's an instrument they bring, and it's all done on a voluntary basis. They invite everybody and people go if they want to go, and if they don't want to go, they don't. Once a month they have somebody come in and do a talk about anything. The most recent one was about Italy, the Italian culture, and music, it was very nice. Everything is clean. They're just kind and friendly people. I feel very comfortable with the folks there."

"I was impressed with Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton's grounds and what they have. They have gyms and pools and such. I like it, and I like the neighborhood. It's in the neighborhood where I live right now. The staff members were very informative. They knew what I was looking for, and they gave me the information I needed. They were very good. I did not try the meals. They did offer for me to stay for a meal, but I didn't. The rooms were very nice; I was very impressed. The whole place was great. The people were friendly."

"My husband has moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall. I just liked the building itself, being it was an old hotel, and the rooms were big and nice. The staff was super nice and still they are very nice. I think he's getting better care there. They're nice and considerate. They're there to take care of you, not just because it's a job. They have bingo, movie time, karaoke. The one in charge of activities tried to get my husband to participate in something. Last week, he said, "You're going downstairs with me and we're going to do karaoke." Of course, my husband said, no. He ended up going down, and he had a good time."

"The Gardens of Virginia Beach allowed pets in their facility and that was the main reason my friend chose it. It was also close to home and everybody she knew. The rooms could be bigger but it was spacious enough. I would recommend this place depending on the person's condition. "

"I toured Harper's Station Yorktown. The staff was great. Everybody we met and were introduced to was great. He still follows up on me, calls, and checks to see what kind of progress he's looking at. We went down and met some of the people who are in the memory care area. The patients all seemed to be friendly. They seemed to be happy. It was a good feeling that you almost felt like you weren't in a nursing home-type facility. Everything around it is fairly new and clean. I would guess that place is probably no more than two years old. The landscape, the facilities around it, the amenities they have in that place, the movies, the outside court, and the entertainment areas they have for people were so nice. They have a band that comes in like once a week and plays. The pricing was right in the ballpark with everybody else. They explained how the lunches worked, that people could come down for lunch. They showed the different lunch rooms. They have a couple of different places and even a bar for them. And the bar is non-alcoholic, but it's like a bar you'd go to somewhere else with all these barstools, tables, and everything around it. It's just that they got all these juices and all kinds of stuff behind the bar. It can make you feel like you want to sit there and play cards with somebody. You could play cards and have your glass of orange juice or something. It's really comfortable. Their lunchroom has a menu on the table, with white tablecloths and menus for choosing what you want for dinner or lunch. Everything gets cooked and everything's done right there. It's not prepared like in a cafeteria."

"It was very high class and enormous. It was the most expensive of the places we visited. Everybody was nice. There was not as much hustle and bustle going on. It was quiet. They had a salon and a workout area, which I was not impressed with. I thought with such a good place, they could have had more. They had independent living. The staff did very well. It had a more reserved and more formal feel to it."

"My mother will be moving into Harmony on the Peninsula. It was just a warm and friendly atmosphere as soon as you walked in the door. There was a bedroom with a shower, a living room, and a kitchen area. It was fully furnished. The staff was excellent. I smelled the food when I walked in, and it smelled delicious. They provide three meals and a snack. The staff showed me a library and a game room. The price was excellent. They had a restaurant-style dining area."

"I went to see Gates House in Gatesville and was very impressed with it. One of their representatives is supposed to go to where my husband is now and evaluate him. I saw some of the assisted living, but the tour is mostly for memory care because my husband has Alzheimer's. I've been talking with one of their representatives for several days now, and she's always been punctual in getting back to me. She keeps me informed and gives me some assurance that they're trying to do what they can to help me. I'm looking for a locked unit for my husband, for safety, and I was impressed with the rooms, the cleanliness, the way the residents appeared there, and the way the staff worked with us. I also like that the rooms were neat and the bathrooms were clean."

"Bickford of Virginia Beach was beautiful and very well-managed. It's just that my mom is a lot younger than everybody that's there. Also, there wasn't a whole lot of outside activity (it was February when I went in there). They have games, gatherings of different sorts, card playing, and just more indoor-related behaviors and activities. If it was appropriate for my mom, I would think it would be an excellent place for someone. It's a nice place and it's in a great location. They were all very considerate, thoughtful, and professional."

"Mother passed while at Arden Court within a week after she had a terminal diagnosis. The staff couldn't have been more loving and caring with her from her arrival to Arden Court and through the week that she passed. They were loving, kind, and nurturing to her always. I cannot thank you enough for making it a happy home for her. I tell everyone about how wonderful and dedicated you all are to your house guests!"

"My husband has moved into Anchor of Hope Senior Living of Suffolk LLC. We chose it because it was very personalized with a small number of patients to the number of nurses. There's no risk that they'll say, "The Medicare is finished, so he has to leave now." He could stay there the rest of his life if he had to. It's very homey. It's in a regular house, so it has nice sunny windows and it's carpeted. It's very nice and very peaceful. It's just super pristine. Everything is perfectly clean like nobody's even been in there. It's well-kept. They have a physical therapy company that comes in. He's getting over a stroke, so he's there mostly for physical therapy. The food looks good and he likes it. He has a big screen TV which he likes. They have a washer and dryer and they do the laundry for the residents. They can eat in their room, but there's a common eating area, too, and they can eat together if they like. They have a stairlift but he's so feeble that he can't even walk. He can only use one hand, so he's pretty limited in what he can do right now. They help him with bathing and dressing, and they administer his medicines."

"Bickford of Suffolk is a family-owned establishment. It's very pretty and very nice. I don't think the rooms were quite as big, but as far as the amenities and everything that they had there, everything was beautiful. It's very, very comforting. You walk in and it's got a brick fireplace. It's just very welcoming. They have a beautiful courtyard and a big gazebo. I like their dining room because they section it off a little bit, so it gives you a little bit more privacy while you're eating. You're still eating with the other residents, but it just seems like it's cozy. The person who gave me the tour was perfect. She went above and beyond. I did not taste the food, but it looked and smelt delicious. They were eating lunch when we were there."
