"I stayed at Commonwealth Senior Living at Churchland House for four weeks. I like the meals. They were nicely served. The food was good. The staff members were attentive, but they were not too plentiful. They had bingo and Bible study. They had reading and jigsaw puzzles available. I chose a small room, and it was satisfactory. They had a salon and a courtyard. Portsmouth is rather small, so everything is nearby. The upkeep was satisfactory. The cleanliness was good."

"Commonwealth Senior Living at Cedar Manor is very beautiful. We enjoyed the information that the two guys gave us and they even answered the questions that we had. It was a great tour. The rooms were gorgeous. The dining area was very clean. They have a few board games and stuff, and it would be a perfect place for my dad."

"Georgian Manor has been so beneficial for my mom and our complex family situation. Highly Recommend them. They have been very flexible with our unique needs. Staff are always jovial and uplifting, providing helpful advice on what's best for mom. They also provide a caregivers support group which is particularly helpful. "

"My mom moved into Bickford of Chesapeake in November. The facility is beautiful and brand new. It just opened in May, but it feels like home when you're inside. It doesn't feel institutional at all. They have big fireplaces and sofas in the seating areas. The staff is amazing and very knowledgeable. My mom has a large studio room that's nice and bright. It doesn't have a kitchenette. It's just a full bathroom with a walk-in shower. She has a dresser, a nightstand, a sofa with a small coffee table, and a bed, and there's still plenty of room. Three meals a day are included, and they have regular doctor visits. They have a hair salon inside. They do different fun activities all the time, like movies, popcorn, and games. What I was impressed with is that they have different stations set up throughout the facility to trigger memories. So, one is set up to look like an office, another is set up to look like a laundry area with an ironing board. They're very nicely done. I've been there to visit her when she's having her meals and everything looks good. It's farm-to-table as much as possible. They use fresh ingredients, they don't use processed foods."

"The staff at Commonwealth Senior Living at the Ballentine did really well, were very pleasant, and very knowledgeable. The rooms weren't up to the same level as the other place. They were OK, but it's a much older facility. The dining area was much smaller. I understood from one of the staff that they are going to be doing some renovations. I'm sure that's going to be very helpful. They're short on parking. I have known people who have stayed there, so I've had more opportunity to see it than even when I took my mother, but it's always well landscaped and always looked very nice."

"I thought Harmony at Oakbrooke was a very calming and pleasant environment. All the people, even the residents, were very kind. Everyone spoke, and they smiled. It was really nice. The community was very clean. Everyone was doing what they normally would do. My sister was with me, so we were walking down the hallway, and it smelled clean. The staff said they sanitize the hallways and the rooms very often because, "We don't want anyone getting sick or catching colds and spreading it, so we make sure everything is clean." I thought that was really, really great."

"The service at Indian River Residential Care Community is wonderful because this is a facility that all the people there are all in auxiliary grant, which mean that they are not a rich facility and I don't know if they have patients with private pay. There are a lot of things that they do not have. But for people like my son who cannot go even for one month on a private pay and can no longer live on his own, I thank God there is a facility like this. There is no choice menu, but that's alright. These people are happy that somebody is cooking for them. If they don't like what the dinner is, they can always have a sandwich. They don't have a lot of activities and that's very disappointing because I think old people need activities. But for activities, you need money. These are not well read people, so I think a library will be wasted. However, if a van can take them to a dollar store or Walmart once every other week, that will be wonderful. They will have something to look forward to, but they don't have that. There are some downfalls and yet for people who have nowhere else to go, thank God the place is there. I will rate the manager of that facility absolutely the highest mark plus double it. She is a wonder on this earth and all the people in that facilityand these are her words are her children. She is a wonderful human being. She is very good. She does what she has to do. She has taken a person out of there because he is a danger to others. She gives him a number of chances but it comes to a point that she can't keep him there any longer. Nothing is perfect and I am not saying that this place is perfect. Not all people are as nice or understanding or as kind as she. But ultimately she is in charge and she listen when you talk to her. She asks how we are doing and is everything is okay. She speaks with us and gives us a beautiful greeting when we come in. She runs the place beautifully. It is the love of her life and it shows. The people who are there are on auxiliary grant and these are the people who are not well-off at all. They haven't any abundance of anything in life and some of them like my son are mentally ill and other problems. So, they can't go out and earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year so they can go to a private pay. This is a special place for special people. If somebody doesn't have enough money and can get an auxiliary, there is not that many places around to choose from. "

"I visited Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton with my dad. He actually knew a lady who's living there, so I think he's going to be more comfortable in that place because he knew someone already. His main concern was that it's expensive, but we'll figure it out probably in the next few months or so. It has a very welcoming atmosphere. The staff seemed very warm, friendly, congenial, and caring about their residents. I liked them. They were very accommodating, and I even got follow up emails and calls from the director who took us around. There was a big glassed-in porch, where people could just sit and look out on the world. I liked that idea because sometimes you just want to zone out, and that's a perfect place to be able to do that. There's a place to get your hair done and a dining room that was open and airy. The smell has always been a concern, but the place smelled nice. They clean it a lot. They have a whole calendar of activities. Because of COVID, they're not doing so many out of the building activities. For now, they could only do remote types of activities, like virtual wine tastings. It's just the residents didn't seem to be very perky, but it could be because it was late in the day. Maybe earlier in the day they were perkier, or it's just because of COVID. I thought the facility itself was nice. They showed us a studio, but it's actually quite a big room for a studio. There was a separate bathroom, which was nice."

"My mom moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall. The experience has been really good. My mom seems happy, and things seem to be going well. The staff members are very, very nice. In fact, at all the Commonwealth facilities I visited, the people were really nice. They seem to really care about the residents. The rooms are spacious. The fact that they all have bathrooms makes it nice. The way they are laid out is good. Even if you have a companion, you still have your own space. We ate there, and the food was good. They have farm to table. They partner with different farmers, so they get a lot of fresh food, and that's important. They have lots of activities, and my mom enjoys quite a few. It seems to be working out very well for her right now. The facility is a little bit older, but it's well kept."

"My friend moved into the Regent of Newport News. It has a bedroom, living area, and bathroom. I've seen the dining room where they have barbecues, and the outdoor areas where they brought a bar from Ireland over. They don't serve alcoholic drinks. They use that as a backdrop for their big TV room. My friend told me that the food has been excellent. He's had two meals there. He was in the hospital for four months and couldn't stand the hospital food, so the fact that he finds this food appealing is a lot. It's spotless. I was very impressed with its cleanliness. The staff are all so friendly. They seem to want to make the residents pleased with the service that they're getting. The executive director came to my friend's old apartment, and they physically moved the furniture to relieve me, because I live in Florida and I drove up to Newport News. I just had so much to do in such a short amount of time. The executive director drove the Regent van to the apartment, loaded up all of his friend's furniture, and took it back to the Region of Newport News. I thought that it was really special that he personally did that. And they don't have separate nursing fees."

"My tour experience with Acclaim at East Beach was good. The size of the apartment was good, and the windows looked out onto a courtyard. They also had a breakfast bar downstairs. "I toured Harper's Station Yorktown. The people, the community itself, are very welcoming. I got a chance to eat there. They had a lot of choices, and the food was very good. The washer/dryer was good, a closet with doors. That's the only thing I was hesitant about, but good size. This facility is practically new. They have a pool and exercise equipment, and everything you need."
