I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband was in Calvert County Nursing Center. The rehab people were good and they did what they could do. I cannot recommend the place itself because my husband has macular degeneration and can see very little. They would wheel a tray of food and not even look to see if he even understood it was there. A half an hour later they'd wheel it out without ever even seeing if he knew it was there. I went every single day to help feed him his lunch. He would try to eat with his hands because he couldn't find the silverware. He lost 35 pounds. He went from 220 to 185, and then they sent him home. They had activities, but he couldn't participate because he can't see. They did not have anything that he could do with his very limited eyesight. They did not encourage conversation. I talked to other caregivers and they felt the same problem that their caregivers did not talk to them. They just simply wheeled them in and out. They had activities for the full-time residents. The rehab area did not have activities at all. The staff was positive in their attitude and behavior. However, they would not get my husband cleaned and ready for the day until 10:00 or 10:30 in the morning, and he'd lay there waiting for something to happen. They were short staffed all around, and on weekends they had almost nobody there, which I understand. Though I felt the care wasn't really worth it, I feel that they were doing the best they could in many ways. I could see other patients had better, more interesting food. They put him on a kidney diet. There were beets, green beans, and brussel sprouts. The meat was either chicken or turkey. Once in a while, maybe once a week, fish. He was bored out of his mind. That was lunch. Many times he said, "I didn't get a breakfast." I knew that things weren't going well. The facility was pretty nice. He was in a two-bedroom and he was on the inside, and with the curtain drawn he got no light at all. It was really dark, but he couldn't have seen that much even if he was on the other side of the room, so I can't really complain. He was in the dark an awful lot of time, and thus had no idea what time of day it was, and that was not great for his mental ability. It was paid by Medicare.

Rooms are great and cleaned daily. The food is good and offers preference to residents.

I visited this facility

Calvert County Nursing Center was understaffed. It was run by people that should not be running it. My husband's room was clean. It had two people in it, but there were not enough nurses to go around. The people there were always trying to get the nurses' attention, and then they would just walk by them and ignore them. They didn't keep my husband there long enough. They said insurance was cutting him off, and they were just sending people home that couldn't even walk. They had bingo, and that's it. They listed other stuff, but they didn't have it.
