Continuing Care Retirement Communities Communities in State College, PA

"Foxdale Village is run by the Quakers and it is also a not-for-profit place. I definitely decided I want to go to one of the numerous CCRCs operated by the Quakers. I have always liked the Friends' Society, so it makes sense for me to go to one of their facilities. The location of Foxdale Village is also convenient for me. I have one son who lives in State College and I'm trying to find a place that I like that can be close enough to my children, so they can come and visit me fairly regularly. Plus it is a lovely facility! They have lots of activities. Unfortunately they don't have a swimming pool, although I would still recommend this place. The staff is very nice. We got a lovely tour. As we were touring, I needed to stop and rest on one of their benches outside. While we're there resting, residents kept coming up and saying, "You need to come here, we really hope you come here, it's wonderful!" It wasn't a pre-arranged stuff and it was people who were walking by on their daily businesses, but everybody was very friendly and very happy with this place. "

"This facility reminds me more of an upper class gated community than a retirement community. The homes are beautiful, from the inside right out to the perfectly landscaped yards. The amenities are endless and allow for those who reside there to feel as if they are on an extended vacation. The location is very secure and it seems well known that there is always someone there to look out for you or lend a hand. The staff is friendly and willing to help in any way needed. They are all educated and experienced and have a great deal of knowledge in their respective areas. The cleanliness was superb and there seems to be a large list of activities available to residents. This is definitely not what my idea of a retirement community would be like. This is all around the type of home and area you would want to live. "

"As far as the setup and everything, The Oaks at Pleasant Gap was nice. I think they offered some nice things like physical therapy. The lady who toured me around was great. It just seemed a little dingy to me, and a little bit older. There's nothing wrong with that. I think it would be nice for a lot of people. I just didn't have a good feeling for my father-in-law to be there."

"My mom is doing very well at Valley View. The staff is excellent. Our only complaint would be the food, it's terrible. They do have activities, they're adequate, I've only attended a few of them with my mother and the girl seemed to be doing a good job. "

"My mother was at Windy Hill Village for a couple of years. She was getting along just fine, but she started forgetting everything, so it wasn't a place for her to be. They couldn't watch her, and they weren't supposed to watch her because it's an assisted living. The room was very nice and very adequate, but the bathroom and the shower were smaller. The nurses were topnotch and did above and beyond the call of duty, and so were the aides. I liked the facility, they had a nice big beautiful room, and they had a nice classy dining area. The cooks all knew what they liked and they knew everybody by name. They just didn't have a lot of activities for the people there. They're attached to a nursing home, so a lot of the activities that they do are associated with the nursing home and these people in assisted living aren't to that point yet. It's on top of a hill and if you don't have a car, you just don't get away if you don't have somebody come and get you. The staff was fabulous, the nurses, the cook, everybody treated all these patients like they were their relatives. She got everything that she needed, she had nursing care, people watching out for her, a decent room, good food, and people enjoyed being with her."
