I am a friend or relative of a resident

My husband has been in Gateway for around a week. It is pleasant, I like it and he has no complaints with the food. The staff seems good. They have a schedule of activities. They have religious service, physical therapy, Bingo, movies and there seems to be something going on in the community room all the time.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The look and the feel of Gateway, I want to say, is probably a little bit depressing. It was a very hard time for me and my family because we weren't prepared to do this with my grandmother. This place was understaffed. We did feel, at times, that my grandmother was being neglected in certain areas whether it was by food or changing. I don't know how they did their rounds about each patient but it wasn't the best experience. I know that there were certain nurses that were absolutely wonderful, helped her tremendously and then you had other staff that weren't so helpful and I don't feel that they did their job as well as others did. There are a couple of things that I remember about this place but the smell in there was horrible. You have patients in the hallways crying and I know that each patient has their own scenarios, their own diagnosis, their own issues but when you see this, it puts stress and it really does do a lot to your heart because you feel more uncomfortable that your grandmother has to be in a place like this. I don't have the best things to say about it. They had an activity room and sometimes they'd be doing cooking or watching a movie so they would wheel her into there and there were other patients in there as well. They changed from week to week or day to day so they did that for their patients. I found that a lot of times if you presented to them an issue or situation, it would always be pointing the finger to someone and most of the time, it was the case of they're understaffed, they're doing their best and when you have a high emotion situation like this, that's not good enough. I know it's difficult and I could only imagine being in that field and that position. I can only imagine how much workload they have but when you provide a place like this with an issue, you don't want to hear that it's because they're understaffed. I think the area that they would have to work on is accepting responsibility and ownership on whatever they felt to do or achieve.
