What to Consider About Assisted Living in El Paso

In El Paso, and throughout Texas, assisted living facilities are overseen by Texas Health and Human Services (HHS). To obtain a license, facilities must pass both an on-site life safety code inspection and a separate on-site health inspection, with licenses to be renewed every two years.

  • With its desert climate, El Paso experiences mild winters and low levels of humidity throughout the year. Affectionately known as “Sun City,” seniors can expect to see 297 days of sunshine and temperatures upward of 30 degrees. Overall, the city’s comfort index is 8 out of a possible 10.
  • El Paso is a perfect destination for active retirees who enjoy spending time outdoors, with numerous outdoor parks, trails and wilderness areas, including Franklin Mountains State Park. The city is also known for its rich culture and history, home to museums, galleries, entertainment venues and culinary hotspots.
  • El Paso is considered to be pretty safe for seniors. The city’s below-average crime rates may offer peace of mind to seniors and their families. In terms of violent crime, the city receives an index rating of 22.1, which is slightly lower than the U.S. average. Property crime rates are also lower, scoring 30.6 compared to the national rating of 35.4.
  • There is no income tax in Texas, which means that Social Security benefits, pensions and income from all other retirement accounts will not be taxed. However, seniors should note that Texas does have some of the highest sales and property taxes in the United States.
  • Sun Metro provides seniors with reliable public transportation services throughout the El Paso area. Seniors are eligible for highly discounted fares. In addition to its fixed-route services, the system also offers the LIFT paratransit service and free streetcar trolley services in select areas.
  • Seniors in El Paso are fortunate to have access to world-class health care. Sierra Providence Health Network is the city’s largest hospital operator, with a network of hospitals, clinics and specialized health care centers.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities

El Paso is one of the least expensive cities for assisted living in southwestern Texas. In nearby Odessa, seniors pay an average of $4,398 per month. Midland is even higher at a monthly cost of $4,789. Moving further east, rates are a little less expensive in cities such as San Angelo and San Antonio, where assisted living is priced at $3,000 and $3,413 per month, respectively.

The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care

Seniors who only require a minimal amount of assistance may find that adult home health care adequately serves their needs. It’s the city’s cheapest option at just $628 per month. In-home care and home health care services are also less expensive than assisted living. These options allow seniors to age in place at home and cost an average of $3,623.
