Victorville, California, is a large city of 122,385 residents that falls within the greater Los Angeles statistical area. About 9% of those residents are aged 65 and older. Even with a lower older population, Victorville is still an attractive place for seniors to retire. While its cost of living is several points above the national average, its cost of health care is eight points below. Victorville also has a high score of 8/10 on the Best Places Comfort Index.
Assisted living is an ideal solution for seniors who are still active but need help with some activities of daily living such as preparing meals, transportation or grooming. Seniors who need consistent help with these activities or medical care are better suited for nursing homes, not assisted living. The Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020 places Victorville’s cost of assisted living at $5,000 a month. That’s the same as the state average but several hundred dollars above the national average.
This guide will look at the costs of assisted living in Victorville and nearby cities. It will also offer the benefits and drawbacks of living in Victorville and the free resources available to seniors in the city.

Kar’n Care Home was excellent and I loved them. The place was great and clean. I loved the people. Everybody there looked happy and content. They take them out and I loved the fact that they have service dogs who work with people there. The food was good. It’s a family-run business, and they were super nice. The rooms were good, and they had a modified shower that people can get in and out of, and that was smart. The house itself was smart and well thought out. They had a bus that was equipped for handicapped people, and they take them on outings. They also do barbeques. They’re great in everything they do, just super.

Extremely rude and unprofessional staff and ownership. I called the facility one night to speak to my grandfather , and an employee answered as she was yelling at one of the residents. The employee put the phone down while I was still on the line and all I heard was her constant yelling at the poor resident who was in distress. The food they provide is all frozen and processed, not nutritious at all. When my grandfather passed, an employee lied and claimed he was sleeping. The owner then proceeded to tell another family member of mine in a cruel way that my grandfather had died three hours ago. No compassion, no sympathy. They don’t provide activities or amenities for the residents. The workers will just be on their phones and gossip amongst themselves. This facility does not care for their residents, only the money they are receiving from the family member who put them in there. I would NEVER put a family member in the care of this facility.

I toured Crystal Garden. There are way too many people for that home. The medication didn’t look like it was being monitored. It wasn’t locked up. It was in a cabinet that was unlocked and accessible to anybody. There were places outside that had a rebar sticking up and they just put a little plastic cup over it. There were about ten of those in the middle of this patio. It was just totally unsafe.
The staff was nice, but they were busy feeding people. There were just so many people crammed into that little area. They were nice but they were overwhelmed. The food looked really good; it looked tasty. I watched them prepare it because the kitchen and the dining table are all right there, so you could see it all happening. It’s just a home that they’ve added rooms to. However, every time I asked the staff a question that would deal with health care, he said, "Well, we’re not required by law to have that."

This is a great facility with excellent care givers. My Mom was there for almost a year and received a lot of personal attention. She was a picky eater but that didn’t stop them from trying different foods and drinks to find what she likes and make her favorite meals.
I really can’t express how grateful I am about the quality care she received it was so important for us.
I will share that my mom passed while she lived at Carmel and the staff was incredible in helping me through a very hard time.
My Aunt is also a resident there, and I will continue to visit her and see the staff.
They’re very Professional, Honest and Compassionate! They all went above and beyond for my Mom!!
I Highly recommend Carmel Care Home!

My mom has a nice room. It’s small, but it fits her needs perfectly and they were able to furnish it with everything she needed. It worked out great. Everything looked well maintained and extremely clean. The kitchen was immaculate along with the bathrooms. As soon as you walked in, they had all the hand sanitizers, the temperature gauge, and the thermometer. I felt very comfortable.
They immediately went out and picked up food that my mom wanted or is used to having. Like she has a protein shake every day and she’s a big Diet Pepsi drinker and they went out and got that. They were fantastic and I think the cost is well worth it.

Calvet operates eight veterans’ homes throughout the state that provide assisted living and other forms of Senior care for older veterans, their spouses or survivors. This includes veterans who require some support with the activities of daily living in a supervised facility. Residents may receive assistance with taking medication, grooming, bathing and other activities.
Long-term care ombudsmen advocate for seniors in conflicts with assisted living facilities or other long-term care institutions. Once the complaint investigation is complete, ombudsmen work to resolve the issue between the two parties. Ombudsmen also advise seniors on finding an appropriate facility, problems with bills and how to manage appeals on other health care issues. Use the Find Services in My County page of the California Department on Aging website to find a local ombudsman.
The department provides services and resources to seniors in the county, including Victorville. These services include nutrition for needy seniors, family caregiver support program, a public guardian/conservator service, senior community service employment programs and senior centers that offer wellness, congregate meals and counseling.
Medicaid eligible seniors or their caregivers who have questions about health care under Medicare coverage can speak to a HICAP counselor. These trained counselors will provide free, unbiased and confidential information about Medicare choices, including the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Programs, how to select a Medicare Part D prescription drug program or if a senior needs Medigap. Counselors do not work for any health care company and will never try to sell or promote any commercial insurance product or service.
