Since my dad’s passing, we have continued companion care for my mom. Today is National Third Shift Workers Day–a big shout-out to Kaleah, Kim, Lisa, and any others that stayed at the house to supervise and watch over my parents. THANK YOU!

Kenia is a great companion. We go out to eat, laugh, talk, and do yard work. I have a great time. She spoils me.

I’m using HomeCare.com. It’s fine. They’re very good and very responsive to any concerns I have, and they’ve provided me with a good health care aide, not great necessarily, but good. They also provide light housekeeping, they help me clean myself up, and they take me to my appointment. They get here within a certain time window between 7 and 7:30, and that’s when I need them here. A lot of times my communication is directly with the aides. If she can’t come on a certain day, the agency would contact me to see whether I need some assistance or need somebody to fill me in on a given day. I think I’m paying more than I probably should because they have a mandatory number of days that I can contract for, and that’s probably more than I usually need. To maintain the contract, I have to keep them on a certain number of days.

I cannot say enough amazing things about Horizon Health Care Services and the tenderness and professionalism they have shown toward my mother. Last year my mother began declining mentally and physically, suffering from dementia, incontinence, and a host of other challenges our family has watched her deal with. Her caregivers at Horizon have given her the very best care treating her as if she were their own mother, respecting her and giving her dignity and giving us peace knowing she is in excellent hands. They arrive on time and care for her daily needs and medical needs. I receive prompt call backs from management to discuss her changing needs, and they quickly accommodate our requests. Horizon Health has been the answer to our prayers, and my mother’s.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
