Situated about 90 minutes north of Austin and an equal distance south of Dallas, the midsize city of Waco is an appealing oasis of Southern hospitality in the Lone Star State. According to U.S. Census estimates, Waco is home to about 139,236 residents; about 12% of those residents are seniors.

While the city’s population skews a bit younger than average due to the presence of Baylor University, Waco has much to offer retiring seniors, particularly those who prefer warm weather. Late-summer highs regularly sit in the 90s, the area gets a higher-than-average amount of sunny days, winter lows rarely dip below freezing, and there’s no measurable snowfall.

Additionally, according to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, the cost of home-based care is appreciably lower than average in Waco. Genworth’s data show that the national average cost per month for homemaker services is $4,481, while home health aide services average $4,576. In Waco, each service costs an average of $4,004 per month, a savings of roughly $475 to $575 over equivalent costs elsewhere in the country.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Waco area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Waco Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Waco:

Meals on Wheels Waco

Address: 501 W Waco Drive, Waco, Texas 76707
Phone number: (254) 752-0316

This program is available for Waco residents age 60 and up. Its core service, a meal program that delivers hot meals to homebound seniors who cannot shop or cook for themselves, is available five days a week. Meals on Wheels Waco also runs an array of related support programs for low-mobility seniors. Such initiatives include a pet program that assists elderly residents in caring for their animal companions and a curb-to-curb transportation service that helps seniors safely get around town.

Area Agency on Aging of the Heart of Texas

Address: 1514 South New Road, Waco, TX 76711
Phone number: (254) 292-1800

This agency supports the needs of seniors in six Texas counties, including Waco’s McLennan County. Most of its services revolve around education, caregiver support, benefits counseling and long-term-care safety. Benefits counseling can help seniors understand various rules surrounding Medicare and private insurance, while caregiver support offers training and psychological counseling to those who spend time caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s and similar dementias.

Care Coordination Program

Address: 1514 South New Road, Waco, TX 76711
Phone number: (254) 292-1800

Part of the AAA’s senior services, the Care Coordination program connects case managers with senior clients to determine the kinds of contracted services that can best improve the seniors’ quality of life. Case managers can help seniors purchase major appliances such as stoves and microwaves, coordinate respite support of up to 6 months for primary caregivers, and schedule homemaker services that provide basic cleaning and food preparation.

Texas Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 221 East 11th Street, Austin, TX 78701
Phone number: (888) 606-8889

This statewide program focuses on assisting seniors and low-income Texans with home weatherization projects. Projects can include patching holes and caulking windows, updating HVAC systems and adding insulation. In addition to making seniors’ residences safer places to live, it can also make them cheaper places to live due to the reduced energy costs.

Texas Legal Services Center

Address: 1920 E. Riverside Dr., Suite A-120, #501, Austin, TX 78741
Phone number: (512) 477-6000

This nonprofit organization works with low-income, elderly and otherwise underserved populations throughout Texas, providing legal advice on civil matters at no cost. The TLSC’s services can help seniors understand legal issues related to estate planning, homeownership and transfer, power of attorney and Medicare. The legal hotline is open to Texas residents who are at least 60 years old, a Medicare beneficiary of any age, or both.
