Michelle has almost a decade of experience in making lives better. Starting her healthcare career as a private duty home care aide, Michelle then went on to undertake her Nurse Aide 1 training and took on a role in the memory care unit in an assisted living facility. Michelle’s passion for home care saw her maintain her private duty clients as she progressed through her Registered Nurse program. After graduating, Michelle worked for a large multi-hospital health system but missed the deep connections and lasting impact that home care provides - she has been focused on home care ever since. "At the moment, we have Right at Home Durham-Chapel Hill coming in 15 hours a week. They are helping my husband get up in the morning, get him washed, shampooed, and shaved, taking care of his incontinence, and helping him with getting the meals. For any of the soiled laundry or so forth, they put it in the washer and dryer and fold it, and they change the bed usually once a week. And then it allows me to go out and get my groceries or to go to doctor's appointments and things like that. I don't use them for my housework or stuff like that; I handle that. "We have Home Instead Senior Care coming in a few days a week. My mom is pretty high-level functioning and so it is basically for transportation, errands like going to the grocery store or doctor's appointments, socialization, and some activities. The person does light activity around the household and also provide some exercises. She walks my mom right around the neighborhood. She gets her outside to walk around. The weather has been pretty good out there, and it is pretty nice to walk outside these days down there. It's companionship, basically, and it is more for cognitive issues. My mom needs a lot of verbal cuing, so that's what the lady is doing. She gives reminders with medications or putting the phone back in the cradle, lots of verbal cuing, and supervision. Right now, they are very accommodating; for example, if one of us is coming in from out of town, and we do not need their services, they're pretty flexible about that -- like not coming out when we ask them. Of course, we give them advanced notice, and they're pretty flexible on that. The nurse is very accommodating, and the scheduler is very accommodating. The aide herself is very good. They bill every two weeks."
