Omaha Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Omaha:

Nebraska Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Address: 220 S 17th Street, Lincoln, NE 68509
Phone Number: (402) 471-9291

The Nebraska LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps low-income households with paying high energy bills. The program provides year-round crisis assistance, as well as heating and cooling assistance and furnace and central air conditioner repair. To be eligible, applicants must meet the income guidelines and Nebraska residency requirements. Seniors are given priority.

Meals on Wheels

Address: 4780 South 131st Street, Omaha, NE 68137-1822
Phone Number: (402) 502-0360

Meals on Wheels provides Omaha seniors with home-delivered meals. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. by a friendly volunteer. The program is available to housebound seniors who find it difficult to go grocery shopping or prepare food for themselves and the program is also available to senior caregivers.

Medicaid Waiver Program

Address: 4780 South 131st Street, Omaha, NE 68137
Phone Number: (402) 546-1870

The Medicaid Waiver Program gives seniors the opportunity to use Medicaid funds to pay for other services such as home-delivered meals and assisted living, which would otherwise not be considered medical. The program is available to seniors aged 65 or older who are eligible for Medicaid and who are able to receive care at home at a cost that is equal to or less than Medicaid would pay for nursing home care. Services include respite care, home modifications and adult day services.

Homemaker Services

Address: 4780 South 131st Street, Omaha, NE 68137
Phone Number: (402) 444-6536

Homemaker Services is a program run by the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging that offers light housekeeping services for seniors in Douglas, Sarpy, Dodge, Washington, and Cass counties. The program is open to seniors over the age of 60 who have passed an eligibility assessment by a care worker. The volunteers offer services that would otherwise be hard for seniors to do, such as taking out the trash, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming and grocery shopping

Senior Food Pantry

Address: 5545 Center Street, Omaha, NE 68106
Phone Number: (402) 444-6529

The Senior Food Pantry is a service run by the Intercultural Senior Center (ISC). It provides vulnerable seniors with food pantry items, hygiene items and cooked meals. It is open to all seniors over the age of 50, regardless of if they’ve participated in any ISC programs before. An ISC worker will arrange pick-up or delivery arrangements.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
