Newbury, and her sister community Newburyport, a beautiful waterfront city only three miles away, are conveniently located 35 miles from Boston. Both cities are part of  Essex County, where they border the Merrimak River and are close enough to Plum Island for residents to enjoy picnics, hikes and sunny beaches. Historic downtown Newbury offers a variety of quaint shops, dining and cultural events to keep residents active and socially engaged. Newburyport, with a larger population, has more services and attractions for seniors to enjoy, including the Maudslay Arts Center and the Newburyport Art Association.

The average temperatures vary seasonally between 21 and 80 degrees, and winters can be cold and windy. Getting around is easy with the Ring and Ride service, which provides curb-to-curb transport, and the North Essex Elder Transport (N.E.E.D.) that provides volunteer medical transport for a small donation.

Almost one in five residents of Newbury are seniors. Those planning on staying in their home as they age may eventually need help. According to the Genworth 2019 Cost of Care Survey, the cost of in-home care and home health aide services in Newbury is about $5,434 and $5,482, both slightly higher than the national averages of $4,290 and $4,385.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Newbury area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
