My sister and I contacted Home Instead in North Andover at a difficult moment, when our father began to exhibit signs of serious mental decline that called for 24/7 assistance, when we each lived some three hours away, in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Within a day or two of our reaching out, the amazing staff had constructed — somehow — a team of caregivers who were with Dad in 6- or 12-hour shifts, consistently, patiently, gently and generously. We frankly were stunned at both the speed of HISC’s response, and the manner with which every aide approached the tasks of being with a very intelligent, private, confused and often obstreperous 89-year old New England Yankee. Everyone to a person has been great: professional, attentive, communicative and able to deal with virtually any issue. We are so grateful. We’ve often looked at each other, wondered what we would have done without this service, and how we might possibly have handled the situation on our own. In a word, we couldn’t.

They’re just there with her at night before she goes to bed to assist with anything that she needs like help her change, help her to the bathroom, maybe help her clean up, and things like that. I chose them after speaking to the owner. He called me back right away and we spoke on the phone. He was actually the only person that called me back after I had reached out to them.
Their care we’re phenomenal. They were amazing. The owner was very invested and helped me through the entire process that I was going through. I was getting an elderly woman out of a nursing home and putting her back into her home, which was the reason why I needed his service which was a 24 hour care service. He helped me through the entire thing when I didn’t know what I was doing. Their attention to detail in individual support was amazing.
The caregivers that we had were amazing. There were several of them, because it was 24 hours so they took shifts. They were kind and compassionate and just amazing people; really kind, loving skilled, everything all combined. They were everything that you would want.
It was 24-hour care so it was everything, bathing, toileting, dressing, companion, cooking, and cleaning.
Our family friend was comfortable with the caregivers. She loved them and they had an excellent relationship. They had a passion for taking care of the elderly, which I think was something special.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Newbury, MA
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.
