"Senior Helpers of San Diego North is helping with my mom, changing her clothes, helping her in the toilet, helping her into her pajamas, reminding her about brushing her teeth, and helping her with her walk or those kinds of things. It's just a couple of hours each day. They are very kind and very patient. They seem well-trained because they speak slowly and loudly. They are aware that my parents cannot hear them. The services we received have been very good."

"We have been using Whole Life Home Care for a couple of months now. We use them on a very limited basis. We have them for a minimum of four hours a week. So far, so good. We primarily use the caregiver to take my dad shopping, just be with him when we're not home, and take him for like a stroll in his wheelchair. The interaction with the caregivers is very good."

"We hired Always Best Care. We have 4 hours 2 days a week where a caretaker comes in and basically gets my dad out and entertain him. We have someone who keeps my dad from sitting there and staring at the wall. I described what I was looking for as a caregiver -- I wanted an older male -- and we have the same one the whole time. My dad seems to like him, so that's what counts with me. We have been using them for 6 weeks now. The people themselves are very organized, friendly, and personable. I think I would recommend them. So far, it has been a good experience. My only negative thing is that convenience is important to me, and I would like to be able to pay my bills online; so far, that has been an issue. They did finally have a system, but it is not working. So at this point, I’m still having to write checks and mail them every week; I don’t like that. "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Vista:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Services Center | (760) 643-5288 | 1400 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista, CA 92084 | The Gloria McClellan Adult Activity and Resource Center is a state-funded center that offers a range of services and activities for senior citizens in the community. Services offered by the center include tax assistance, legal assistance, hearing screenings, transportation and health insurance counseling. The center provides lunch to seniors who attend activities and there is no charge for the meal. Activities offered include bridge, knitting circles, movies, bingo, sewing classes, chair yoga and fitness classes. Some of the classes are free and others charge a small fee. |
| Meal Delivery Service | (760) 643-5288 | 1400 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista, CA 92084 | This program is funded by the federal government, the city of Vista and donations from the community. The aim of the service is to provide meals to seniors over the age of 60 who are homebound. In order to qualify for the program, seniors must be incapable of doing at least two of the following activities on their own: bathing, walking, eating, dressing and toileting. Clients are assessed on a quarterly basis to ensure that they still qualify for assistance. A meal is delivered on a daily basis from Monday to Friday and two frozen meals are provided for the weekend. There is a suggested contribution for each meal but finance is provided to those who are unable to pay. |
| Transport | (760) 643-5288 | 1400 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista, CA 92084 | Out and About Vista is a program funded by the city of Vista. The aim of the program is to promote self-sufficiency for senior citizens and enable them to live in their own homes for a longer period of time. Volunteers from the community, use their private vehicles to transport homebound seniors to the shops, banks and social events. The volunteers are reimbursed for the mileage and supplemental insurance required. A notice period of 24 hours is required when booking a ride with this system. Donations are appreciated but there is no charge for using the transport service. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
