"Senior Helpers of San Diego North is helping with my mom, changing her clothes, helping her in the toilet, helping her into her pajamas, reminding her about brushing her teeth, and helping her with her walk or those kinds of things. It's just a couple of hours each day. They are very kind and very patient. They seem well-trained because they speak slowly and loudly. They are aware that my parents cannot hear them. The services we received have been very good."

"Caregivers stayed with our mom through the night to make sure she stayed in bed and had companionship when she could not sleep and was confused or frightened. They were always on time, personable, easy to talk with, and prepared for our mom's needs. They kept informative logs that helped our family. Staff and caregivers were always professional and compassionate. We could trust that our mom's needs were being met, and this helped all of us manage a difficult situation."

"We have been using Seniors Helping Seniors for six weeks now. It is an affordable and excellent service. Even before we hired the service, the owner helped my dad evacuate during the fires in Fallbrook. The owner interviewed my dad, and since he knew the area that was affected by the fire, he came out again and evacuated my dad even before we hired them to provide the service. We are very pleased with the quality of the caregivers they provide too. They have a couple of different people coming in. They come in 14 times a week. They come in in the morning and then in the afternoon. They're assisting and driving my dad to appointments and grocery shopping."

"We are working with Homewatch Caregivers for my dad. It is generally positive. For the most part, they have been pretty receptive to our needs. My dad has unfortunately been in and out of the hospital, so we haven't needed them at times, but they're flexible about rescheduling. That is a positive aspect of the services they are providing. The caregivers themselves, according to my mom, have been very helpful. It has been pretty good. They provide basic caregiving and they help around the house. At one time they also helped with taking my dad to appointments."

"Qualicare in North San Diego County served my parents for over a year. The administrative staff was always caring and responsive. Whenever we had questions they treated us with kindness and respect. The caregivers became friends and eventually took over showering, meals, bathroom help, meds, and light shopping. We couldn't have made it without them. Though they would lose business they helped us know when it was time to move on to the next step. We were pleased with them and recommend you give them a try."

"I have been using Right at Home Temecula for my mother for eight months now. I didn't have a lot of time to do much searching. We felt that it was necessary to get somebody in there right away because my mother became non-ambulatory. So I called them and got the information from them, and they could send someone out the following day, so that was important for me. The caregiver is assisting my mother to the bathroom and bathing. Regarding billing and scheduling, it has been great so far. The caregiver is awesome. Her name is Brittney, and she's amazing. She is there every day on time and does exactly what she's there to do. She is there to take care of my mother and not both of them, but she's very good with both of them. "

My dad is not the easiest person to work with. His caregiver quickly learned how to win his confidence and provide him the support he wants and needs. "The lady from Interim Healthcare of La Jolla was wonderful. She provided a lot of information. She brought up concerns that I didn't even think we had. And she brought in ideas on what to do and recommended different places where we could get payment for more hours for them like veterans care and some other stuff. So, she'd been very, very helpful. And she calls and checks up on the service. She was very committed and followed up a lot. My father loves the caregiver. He had a great time with her. Every time I call, the caregiver answers the phone. If there's a question about something, she answers the phone or if I have a scheduling issue that I have to take care of, she answers the phone. If there's something that comes up with the caregiver, the lady from the agency is immediately on it. When the caregiver was sick or she didn't want to get my father sick, she called. She called the staff from the agency and me and texted me. And then the staff immediately said, so I can get this person out, take care of you and she had backup right behind it. So, there was no gap in care time at all that I had to make up for. So very efficient on that one. And, the caregiver's replacement was great, attentive and she filled in right to the spot. She takes him for a walk every day. She gives him a shower, sets him for bed, makes him dinner, and works on memory skills with him. He's getting PT and OT that she has to do every night, and I'm doing it with him during the day, and she's taking care of certain ones. And so good companionship to have, and some light housekeeping making sure everything is cleaned up and put away."

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.
