"My mother-in-law has someone from Synergy HomeCare once every two weeks or so to help her with shopping or anything she needs assistance with. So far, everything's been OK. The owner of the company visited her, and my mother-in-law was very happy about that, said the owner was very nice, left her his card, and told her to call him when and if she needs anything. He did a really nice job. She had one issue with the first caregiver not knowing how to cook, but they fixed that by sending an older lady who was willing to do things my mother-in-law was asking her to do. So far, she likes the lady she has and it's working out."

"My dad is using Happier at Home - Birmingham, AL, and we have a good caregiver right now. I was making meals while I was there, but when I'm not, she'll make lunch and bring it to him. And when he's finished eating, she goes and fixes it up. She takes care of the wash, and you don't even have to ask her. She just goes and takes care of it or changes the sheets. If they have the recipe and ingredients, she'll make a meal, just whatever is needed. She's very warm, caring, and interested in my dad, and that makes all the difference in the world. They've worked to schedule out just the way my dad wants it and have worked it out so that the same person could come and take care of him unless the caregiver is out of town. The bill doesn't count to me, but as far as I know, that's going well, too. The value for money is worth it if you've got a good caregiver."

"I can't thank you enough for how thoughtful you have been towards the care and concern you gave my mom and me from the moment we met and continued to be even when she went to the skilled nursing! But also the times you visited her in the hospital and nursing him were "way above" what anyone would ever expect. That speaks volumes of you and your business! Thank you for all you did for her and me. God bless! "

"Before we found Senior Legacy we didn't know what we were going to do! Mom's dementia was getting worse and someone needed to be with her round the clock. The folks at Senior Legacy have been our salvation! The caregivers are SO compassionate and attentive! Mom loves these ladies...and we do too!! They go above and beyond in my book. The staff is very responsive and always there for us. They are quick to get back to us when there needs to be a change in schedule or whatever. They are always so friendly and understanding! Most importantly, they all really care about Mom and about our family as well. They listen to what we want and then they follow through. They are very thorough on their assessment at the beginning and make helpful suggestions and recommendations. They are safety conscious, keeping Mom's safety and that of their caregiver in mind. We appreciate that SO much! We highly recommend Senior Legacy!"

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Many programs in Pelham and neighboring Birmingham work to support the area’s older adults both physically and financially. Some of the resources in the following chart are overseen by independent nonprofit organizations, while others are government-level initiatives. All are available for low cost or no cost.
| Resource | Contact | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Remedy Center | (205) 783-9170 | This Birmingham-based program collects donations of used durable medical equipment and loans it to area seniors and those with disabilities. There's a small cost to the loan, but seniors can generally get their equipment for under $10. Mobility, safety, assistive and communication devices are available. |
| Alabama Weatherization Assistance Program | (334) 242-5100 | Alabama seniors can increase the energy efficiency of their homes and thereby bring down the heating bills through this program. Weatherization upgrades include sealing drafty window and door frames, replacing failing or broken HVAC systems, upgrading lighting and more. |
| Senior Property Tax Exemption | (205) 325-5500 | Alabama residents over the age of 65 are no longer required to pay state-level property tax, which can result in saving hundreds of dollars on a tax bill every year. The exemption must be explicitly claimed and renewed each year through the Shelby County Property Tax Commissioner's Office. |
| Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging | (205) 670-5770 | Many services for seniors are available from this agency, including free legal aid, assistance with procuring prescription drugs, limited coverage for primary caregivers and doorstep meal delivery for homebound older adults. Agency representatives can also help seniors claim SNAP benefits to increase food security. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
