Assisted Living Reviews for The Residence at Shelburne Bay

I am a friend or relative of resident

This is a terrible place for my mother who is 92 years years old. The staff does not come when her button is rung, the ESP that is paid for does not turn up, my personal caregiver, who was approved by the Lodge, has been locked out of the premises, and my mother has remained unwashed for several days. The housekeeping is cursory and sporadic, the toilet is soiled and we have to clean it out personally, and the staff leaves her cold food in her room and never checks to see if they can at least heat it. In addition, they confiscated her wines, although all but three of them were still corked. The facility is understaffed and has a high turnover. Personally, I was shocked. When I tried to change my mother to another facility, they were delighted, then we received a mysterious phone call saying the director of nursing deemed her inappropriate without even meeting her. My mother is so unhappy she wishes she could die.

Provider Response

We are very sorry that you had a less-than-satisfactory experience under the previous owners at The Lodge at Shelburne. As the new owners, LCB Senior Living is committed to making this the finest senior community in the region.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My experience with the Lodge at Shelburne Bay was extremely positive. My grandmother lived at this facility for a few years and never had any issues with the staff or facility. The staff members were always supportive of the residents and willing to lend a hand when necessary. The facility itself was nice and they offered a lot of daily and weekly activities for the residents to take part in. The location was convenient and the grounds were beautiful with views of the lake, giving many of the residents a beautiful view from their room. The only negative was that it seemed as if there was a high turn around rate of employees. This proved to be difficult for residents with memory problems because it was difficult for them to keep track of the employees and was at times confusing for them. Shelburne Bay is probably one of the best assisted living facilities in the state of Vermont.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The staff is very friendly and the grounds are well kept. It would be beneficial if they provided a cleaning service for all residents as my grandmother isn't always physically able to keep her place as clean as she would like. They seem very concerned with the security of the residents and are always on the look out for suspicious people and cars, especially given some recent reports of prescription drug theft from residents' apartments and from the medical building in the facility itself.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My grandmother lives at The Haven at Shelburne Bay which is a wing dedicated to those suffering from severe memory loss. The nurses there have all been wonderful to her and to myself and my family as my grandmother's mental state has slowly deteriorated. The facilities at Shelburne Bay are well taken care of. There is a small grounds area with a pond and a pleasant walking path. The dining area is fairly fancy and is complete with a bar for the frequent social events held by the community.Over the five or so years I have been visiting Shelburne Bay the staff turnover seems to be fairly frequent at the lower levels but much of the management is intact as far as I can tell. Also, they don't seem to have any trouble finding capable and friendly nurses as replacements.I would certainly recommend Shelburne Bay to anyone, and especially the memory loss facilities at The Haven.

Questions about The Residence at Shelburne Bay

Describe the overall population of assisted living residents at The Residence at Shelburne Bay. What is their average age? What are their favorite things to do?

Our residents live an active life, while living with care support. Our monthly engagement during COVID enables residents to socialize and maintain fellowship, in a safe environment. Residents enjoy pool therapy, anytime dining, singing, making crafts like Chinese Watercolor Cards and so much more. Our residents have an average age of 85. Men and women from Vermont love our community for the open outdoor rec spaces, ponds and walking paths. Local family members have an easy time "selling the benefits" of our community to loved ones in need because of the gorgeous apartments, spacious campus and friendly residents that reside here.

What programs or activities does The Residence at Shelburne Bay offer to enrich residents' well-being?

Residents are permitted guests in our greeting room during COVID. Our engagement team offers ZOOM calls with family members who are not able to visit in person. An average day consists of atleast 5 different activities. Tai Chi, chair yoga, PT/OT, walking clubs, wine and cheese socials, family dining style or a more intimate dining experience in our bistro. Every resident fills out a personal history form so that we can not only engage on a personal level once they move in, but also connect them with other residents that share common faith, interests, dining habits, lifestyle and demeanor. Our role is to honor the interests of all residents and help facilitate a welcoming environment from the first day they are here with us. Residents often say they feel like they "already belong to our family" here.

What places are near The Residence at Shelburne Bay or within walking distance for assisted living residents to enjoy?

The community spans 3 acres near Lake Champlain. We offer a large pond in our courtyard with a paved walking path surrounding. Our perennial garden is tucked away in our back courtyard and features a coy pond and perennial garden that many residents tend to in warmer months. Shelburne Farms, Shelburne Museum, The Spirit of Ethan Allen boat on Lake Champlain, local ice cream shops and maple syrup stops, fall foliage rides and picnics at several gorgeous lookouts are part of our regular programming.

What transportation services does The Residence at Shelburne Bay offer to assisted living residents?

Our 14 passenger van and 7 person shuttle offer residents 4 monthly trips to scheduled appointments. We also offer scenic rides during the spring, summer and fall. If our driver is headed to an appointment and our residents want to "go for a trip to the market" we always accommodate.

What makes the chef or dining program at The Residence at Shelburne Bay exceptional? What kind of menu can assisted living residents expect?

Our culinary program is headed by a European Master Chef. When residents move in we ask them for their favorite meals but also a recipe they would like to see incorporated in to our specials. It is a wonderful opportunity to feel connected and break bread with the residents and speak about their dish when it is offered. Residents can dine from 7 AM to 7 PM in our main dining room or from 10-3 in our Bistro. The Bistro offers flatbread, pasta dishes, crab cakes and daily specials, all prepared in front of the residents and it truly is like a restaurant experience.

What safety features or security measures does The Residence at Shelburne Bay offer to assisted living residents?

There are two distinct buildings, our independent and assisted living building where the security features are presented. In our independent building has a front desk agent there 24 hours a day who can assist with any emergent needs. This front desk person also does apartment checks twice a day, in the morning and at night. This is simply to ensure that each resident is accounted for within the community. Within our assisted living building our care staff is available 24/7. Because we have a pool, this is video monitored. Our grounds are also monitored with surveillance. Each apartment is equipped with a pull cord that signals to the nursing team that a resident has an immediate need. Residents also wear pendants that the care team responds to requests for care. Our internal phone system also has a built in security feature. If it is knocked off of the receiver this sends a signal to the nursing team and front desk that they are in distress.

How does The Residence at Shelburne Bay keep residents' families informed about their loved ones?

The residents and families receive information in several different formats. Families have weekly or bi-weekly communication from the Executive Director. Families also are invited to Zoom calls regarding new residents care plan meetings within the first 14 days, and then thereafter when requested by families or the nursing associates if there are any concerns or care changes. Phone calls are the most valuable and timely form of communication and this occurs on a regular basis. All resident families are provided the nurse email and phone number for any questions to be answered regarding their loved one.

If The Residence at Shelburne Bay accepts dogs or cats, what indoor/outdoor areas can they enjoy?

Pets are welcome here! Our outside courtyard, perennial garden and paved walking paths are a favorite with the dogs.
