My sister-in-law lives at HarborChase of Rock Hill. They're all excellent. Everyone we've met so far has been excellent. They're in the process of updating everything. It is a very nice setting, and it sets back off of the highway. It's very shaded, and they have lots of flowers planted. They have a beautiful front porch for the residents. She seems to be doing activities all the time. They have bingo, singing, and games for them to play. They had a party forum yesterday. They're very active people. The food is very good. The chef does an excellent job. Just like any other assisted living facility, I'm sure the value for money are all high. It's comparable to other places, and I feel like that she's getting good care there.

We went to HarborChase of Rock Hill. I thought they were excellent. If my parents decide they're ready, that would be a very good place. My mom toured with me. The staff who toured us was excellent. She was knowledgeable, friendly, supportive, and not pressuring. She gave us a really good tour. I went twice and had a ham sandwich the first time and a hamburger the second time. They also packed meals for my parents even though they didn't go with me the first time. They got fried chicken. I like the place.

I’m sharing our experience with HarborChase of Rock Hill, South Carolina. My father was a memory care resident from December 2022 through February 2023. Choosing a community for your loved one living with a debilitating illness like Alzheimer’s is incredibly difficult. My family chose HarborChase because they led us to believe they had the experience, competency, and compassion to care for memory care patients at all stages, including those in later stages of Alzheimer's, like my father. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. After moving my father in, our family visited him frequently. We noticed that he was often in dirty clothes or clothes that didn’t belong to him; we labeled all of his clothes upon his move-in, per HarborChase policy, so this was surprising. We routinely confirmed the bathing and hygiene schedule, because it did not appear that he was bathed regularly or that his teeth were regularly brushed. During one visited, his entire mouth was stained black because he had found and chewed on a black marker while unattended for a period of time. There was urine on his bathroom floor on more than one occasion, and his bathroom soap dispenser was empty for the first couple of weeks after he moved in. In addition to the incidents above, the medical team repeatedly messed up his medications. We spoke directly to the medical director each time this happened, and despite our repeated concerns, the errors continued. Alzheimer’s, especially in later stages, is known to cause behavior changes. HarborChase alleged that my father became “combative” as a result of the disease progression and repeatedly sent him to the emergency room. However, my family did not witness this behavior, and neither did the external hospital staff, hospice care, or other healthcare workers who treated him. When we shared our HarborChase experience with them, they were surprised that a memory care facility was unable to manage his care based on the behaviors they saw. They also expressed surprise at the amount and frequency of the injuries he experienced onsite. My father repeatedly suffered head injuries at HarborChase that sent him to the hospital. Hospital and medical staff expressed surprise that one patient had so many injuries in such a short amount of time. Our family understood that 24/7 supervision of all residents was unrealistic, but none of the HarborChase staff or management ever seemed to witness these injuries. After one of the last head injuries in his room at HarborChase, my family found bloody bed sheets on his bed nearly a week after the incident occurred; he had been sleeping on those sheets for days. While the staff generally seemed kind, they constantly appeared to be stressed and overworked. We believe this contributed to the issues my father/we experienced. When we shared our concerns with HarborChase of Rock Hill management, they were consistently condescending and dismissive. The executive director was especially difficult during these conversations. She raised her voice several times during discussions about my father’s care, at one point causing a family member to break down into tears. Following that exchange, the executive director called my mother to complain that she herself was the one who had been mistreated. Working in this environment cannot be easy, but we were appalled that this is the type of behavior that HarborChase considers leadership. Our experience with HarborChase of Rock Hill was worse than we could have imagined. The lack of care shown to my father was disheartening, and the lack of compassion from the management team made this very sad and challenging time even worse. On a tour of the community prior to my father’s move-in, a member of the management team member said that they would rather be allowed to wander off in the woods than be placed in memory care. We wanted to believe this was a poorly considered and insensitive joke, but looking back, this should have been a warning about the attitude of management and level of care provided at HarborChase of Rock Hill.

I like Harbor Chase of Rock Hill. The tour was very thorough. I just got a good feeling about it, like everything from all the facilities to the location. The workers are extremely friendly. The person who took us around was knowledgeable, friendly, and caring. I've been to several events there where the food was presented. They have a small but functional outdoor space. It's well-kept and well groomed. They have a gazebo, a garden area, and a little sidewalk.

We toured HarborChase of Rock Hill and thought it was great. They were very professional, they were very caring and they were very responsible for taking care of the people that were there. It felt very home-like, it was very comfortable, it was a very non-sterile environment. It felt more like you were in your own house than you were in a facility. The rooms are comparable to other places in the area there. They're small, but they do that on purpose because they want people out and about. They don't want them in their rooms. And they did a really good job of providing external activities for the people that live there. So they would be out and about rather than just sit in the room waiting around to educate. They go on field trips, they have activities in the morning and activities in the afternoon that change pretty much every day. They have dozens of things they do with them inside and out. They have food there, 24-7 they can get something to eat, and in addition to their breakfast, lunch, and dinner, snacks are available all the time. So they just kind of want you out and about with other people. It kind of makes it a very comfortable setting because everybody is kind of free to move around as they see fit. I want to live there someday. The people I met were good. They came across as very trustworthy and they did a great job. They have a New York City chef that worked there, that oversees the menu planning.

My mother has just moved into HarborChase of Rock Hill. It has been fantastic. The staff is very professional and very caring. The apartment is perfectly fine for her needs. I know she was playing bingo and was doing arts and crafts yesterday.

My wife was at HarborChase of Rock Hill. She was only there a short time when she was active and conscious. The staff seemed to be concerned about what was going on and tried to accommodate as best as they could. The masks were required anytime we came in, but my wife wasn't there long enough for me to go in. I don't have any clues about the meals, nor about the amenities. The facility looked fairly decent. It looked nice, and it looked well kept. My wife had a studio. She had a bedroom, a little bit of a small sitting area, and then a bathroom. They had an outside courtyard that they could go out into. They had physical therapy available if you needed it. They had a nurse on staff. Everything was fairly decent. The only thing I could find fault with it was the floors in the rooms, they were laminated type floors. Their floors were sleek, so if you're not steady in your balance, you could slip on their floors pretty easily. One of the suggestions I would have is that they could use carpet tiles.

My father moved into HarborChase of Rock Hill. The staff and the food are good. The staff interacts with them more than the other place I've been in. His room is not really large, the food seems to be pretty good, and the dining area is nice and small. They sing, do trivia, and they try and keep their minds active.

HarborChase of Rock Hill is a very nice place. The staff is great, and the dining setup is fine. They keep the residents busy all day long and don't like them to stay in their rooms. I have friends who are residents. The rooms are large and have individual bathrooms. The grounds are very pretty, and some rooms have a double window that faces the gardens. My friend has a sitting area where she could look out into the garden. The food is excellent; my friend also said it's really good.

HarborChase of Rock Hill has good amenities and the people were nice. However, it wasn't as good a value as the community we chose. We also felt that this place was a little too fancy for our mother's preference. It's a good community, but they were doing things that wouldn't be of interest to her.

HarborChase of Rock Hill is clean. Everything is OK. The staff is very accommodating. It's not the top of the line, but it is in Rock Hill, and I didn't want to move to Rock Hill. The layout is OK though.

HarborChase of Rock Hill's rooms were very nice. You had to have your own furniture, and I thought that was a nice touch in a way. Everybody seemed to be very cheerful. If I had to go somewhere, I wouldn't mind being there. They had a beautiful dining room with tablecloths and a menu like you were really out dining somewhere, and I thought that was really nice.

HarborChase of Rock Hill is sufficient. The staff are pretty good; I have nothing bad to say about them. They post a month-long activity schedule for their residents.

I like HarborChase of Rock Hill because it was clean. The patients are well-attended and cared for. They exhibited emotions of happiness and comfort. They seemed to be very alert. It seemed to be a happy place, and they have a very happy environment feel when you walk in. They have an outside garden, and they seem to have activities for all the individuals. They have rooms where it's quiet, and you can read books; and there are rooms with TVs in it whenever you want to watch TV with others.

I liked Harbor Chase of Rock Hill very much. I spoke to Jane Smith -- the director of sales -- and probably spent 2 to 2 1/2 hours with the facility. She did an excellent job. When we walked through, there was a gentleman playing some games on the TV, and the people were getting ready for lunch. There were some activities there, but I didn't pay close enough attention to it. The rooms that I saw were fine. It was definitely clean. If it wasn't clean and decent, I would have left immediately.

My mother has moved in to HarborChase of Rock Hill, and I was very impressed with how helpful the staff were, and the price was something that I could afford. The rooms were very spacious, and I liked the bathroom especially because it is handicap accessible. They have exercise, bingo, movie nights, devotions, and ice cream socials.

We visited about eight places, and we put Mom in HarborChase because it seems to have the most caring caregivers. It is spotless. It has a lot of activities like exercise programs, bingo, poker, scrabble, and meetings, and they have outside activities where they go away on a bus and have lunch and things like that. We had lunch there, and the food is very good. The rooms are extremely large. Each room has a window, and outside the windows are bird feeders and a nice area to look at outside. What I like the best are the people because they really have a passion for their work. The director and the sales director are both passionate. They love what they do, and it comes out. However, I think they need to have more activities for the higher-functioning residents.

Be very cautious while dealing with The management team including Director/Head Nurse/Memory Care unit manager. If your family member is active this isn't the place for them! Very disappointed with this facility. Also be very careful about the prices they give, they will increase the level of care price.
Provider Response
BigJames,

My mom has been a resident of HarborChase of Rock Hill for one year. The Associates treat my mom with much care and respect. The inside of the Memory Care Community is kept clean and odor free. The food is delicious and prepared to the needs of each Resident. The Life Enrichment Team presents activities suited to needs of the Resident. The Associates get to know each Resident and their needs. I believe my decision to move my mom to HarborChase of Rock Hill was the best decision that I could have made for her. Thank you.

My mother was a resident at HarborChase's assisted living for 2 years and then later in their memory care unit. My family was always pleased with the communication on behalf of the staff and administration. Any issues that arose with my mother's care were welcomed and resolved. The care staff as a whole were generous and truly cared for mother. I would recommend this community to anyone seeking an assisted living or memory care community for their loved one.
