North Woods Village Memory Care Assisted Living of Kalamazoo is where my mom is at. It's a very nice place. It's excellent. They have a concierge that we work through, and her name is Cindy. They take really good care of the residents. We had a birthday party for my mom, and it was really nice. It's like a large meeting room with a big table, and we were able to go in there and set up the whole thing ourselves and decorate. There's a restroom right there, so it's very convenient. All of the staff members are very helpful and courteous. They pay good attention to the residents. The only residents in there are memory care residents, so I kind of like that, too. There are four different dining areas. It's almost like a square. There are four different areas, but you can walk all the way around it. Wherever they want to, they can go in the dining room that's closest to where their room is, or they can visit another dining room, it doesn't matter. The meal was OK. I wouldn't say that it was outstanding. I only had one meal there, but Mom seems to do real good eating there. They have a monthly calendar of activities. They had done tree decorating, and they do flower arranging. They have music and they have musicians come in and play. They have a therapy dog that comes in, too. The only complaint I've had is my mom's toilet hasn't been cleaned as often as I would prefer it to be cleaned.

We are choosing North Woods Village for my dad because of the staff to resident ratio, and the care that my dad is going to be given versus what he gets now. It's also beautiful. They have different sizes of rooms in the memory care. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the smallest one, which is what we might have preferred. So, we have to pay more to get the step up from there. The location seems to be OK for me and my sisters. It's on Stadium Drive, which is a busy road, but the place faces the woods, which is nice. The person who toured us was very informative and knowledgeable. My sister had a lot of technical questions that he was able to answer, and he really sold the place well.

My husband has severe dementia. He was previously in another facility that was unable to manage his care and his behaviors. North Woods Village was a life saving change for both of us. The staff exceed every expectation and clearly have their hearts on their mission. We were provided a level of compassion, assistance and guidance that renewed my belief that my husband would have a meaningful, safe life. I am profoundly grateful and can allow myself to rest with confidence, knowing that my husband is in the best possible hands. He is treated with love, compassion and respect.

We had a wonderful experience with North Woods! We would recommend them in a heartbeat. They were extremely knowledgeable about Dementia and Alzheimer's and how to treat the people in their care. They were caring, attentive and the building was very beautiful. There were plenty of activities, the food looked amazing, the rooms were spacious and clean. A thing that was important to us was that they treated my Uncle with dignity as well, which a lot of other places miss.

My dad has moved into North Woods Village. It's a good place, we like the location. We chose it because it's a nice facility, and it's close. They specialize in what we need. The accommodations are wonderful; very nice. The staff members are very nice. They have wonderful amenities. They provide everything. They're very helpful with everything that you need to do with your loved ones, so they communicate very well with you. They serve good food there. The facility is beautiful.

I hesitate to write this review because our friend Dayton is discouraged about not the outward appearance but how the home is staffed. Many times the call bell is not answered in a timely manner. Your “chef” is average & food is cold or unappetizing but, I’ve had some nice meals there. I do think the nursing staff is limited & new staff is constantly being hired. I know the nursing staff is changing & Sally is nearing the age of retirement. I need at least a courtesy phone call from the nurse when he is ill - not from an outside source!! Phone calls at night to the staff is nonexistent-it doesn’t matter what number you call. I can testify to that problem. I have a problem with taking items out of Dayton’s room without him being there or putting things in without him knowing. He is allowed some privacy & he does pay for that space! He can understand a reasonable explanation. I would like a town hall meeting with those who care for their loved ones. We do talk in the hall or by our cars. Most of this can be resolved with steady, additional help. The front desk help is refreshing. The Coronavirus Disease has been contained but, how nice it would be to see your loved one through a window! It seems all shades are down. You cannot drive a situation/company from the bottom up, only from the top down. I feel Dayton is safe but, can mostly take care of himself. He’s been alone for a long time but, can entertain himself (not always the right way) quite easily. Dick & I have disciplined Dayton on occasion & will continue to support you in the future. Sincerely, Marilyn D

About North Woods Village Memory Care Assisted Living of Kalamazoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan
Personalized, Resident-Centered Care
No two residents with memory impairment experience the same challenges, needs or symptoms. “NEW DIRECTIONS”® is a personalized, individualized, and resident-centered program. It's not a one-size-fits-all approach. It is dynamic and able to change as our residents' need change. Each person receives the ideal level of support he or she needs to live as independently as possible.
It all begins with the resident’s life story
Every relationship we have with a resident at North Woods Village of Kalamazoo begins with his or her life story. Quite simply, we get to know our residents. We talk with families, ask questions and learn about each individual's life. Most importantly, we listen. We learn about the family, the resident's profession, passions, interests. What they loved to do, what inspired them, fulfilled them and made them happy. We carry that information in our heads and in our hearts, and that knowledge shapes everything we do for that resident.
Knowing such personal information, we are able to tailor our engaging programming to each person’s individual tastes, interests and abilities. As a result, our residents now participate in favorite hobbies, pastimes and other pursuits that are not only pleasurable, but also provide them with fulfillment, self-confidence and pride.
As an example, if one of our residents loved to cook, we will develop and implement cooking activities. If another individual enjoyed bird watching, we will offer a bird watching activity. Again, these specialized programs will be designed to promote success, emphasizing each individual's strengths and abilities and fostering a sense of accomplishment.
