"I went to Legacy Ridge Trussville and spoke with a gentleman there, and he was very helpful. I'm very impressed with the place. They have a large assisted living facility as well as memory care. My mom has dementia, and memory care was what I was looking for. The rooms were very well maintained. I think they were the right size because you don't need a really large room. They actually had their own bathroom in each room. The dining room was very nice. They had a lot of tables and chairs set up. They have an activity room also. They actually have a person who is in charge of the activities for the people in the memory care facility. They try to engage everybody as well as can be expected. The way I see it, they're striving really hard to be perfect. They were very friendly and very knowledgeable. To me, they had the knowledge and the desire to try to take care of the patients. They had plenty enough parking, I think, and it wasn't crowded."

"We toured the Morningside of Vestavia Hills. I liked the cordialness of the person taking us around. We stopped and met with several of the residents. It was very pleasing, and they were very professional and had great meals. It was just very eye-opening. The interesting thing that we did learn to separate from this thing is that independent living doesn't mean you can't live there if you're in a wheelchair or anything, so that was encouraging. They were just very informative, very professional, and very pleasant. We would suggest people take a good look at that. The building is older."

"My husband was a resident at this facility for almost three years. I call it a facility but it is really more like a home. The administration and staff always treated my husband, family, and me like we were an extension of their families. They were kind, caring, and efficient in their services for my husband. The staff was quick to recognize any medical condition and have it resolved as soon as possible (both medical and mental). My husband has been in three other facilities besides Briar Glen and I rate this one above all others. You must keep in mind it is assisted living, but assisted living at its best in my opinion. The prices, considering others that I have toured are more on the low to middle end. I liked it because it is one level, although a locked facility, the residents can walk the rectangle perimeter and be satisfied without being desperate to get out. I really like that layout rather than 12 rooms down each side with locked doors. It also has a lovely courtyard and many activities for the residents. My husband ate only hamburgers and pizza and the kitchen staff made sure they had them for him. Unfortunately my husband’s condition deteriorated and he had to be moved to a full care facility. He only lived 6 days following that move. I highly recommend this facility if you are faced with the daunting task of finding a home for your loved one who has Dementia or Alzheimer’s."

"I like the environment and the energy of The Ridge at Grandview's assisted living facility. One thing that I look at is if people will make me wait when I have an appointment, or if they are ready to see me. I think that's important, and the person who gave the tour here came in and was ready to see me. Another thing that I also really liked about it is that they did not have just studios, but they also have a few two-bedroom type assisted living apartments. A lot of the places I've seen only have studios. The thing I like best is that it has a whole home team medical group for geriatrics. They have a doctor who comes in, and they also have a PA who is there multiple days of the week. The doctor is there every other day, so there's a doctor or a PA on staff half the week, plus the nurses. They are the most geriatrically geared facility I toured. They also have open visitation. You have to let them know, but you can come in and eat with the resident when you can come visit. There are a few places out there that will let you come visit, but you can't eat with the residents, or you have to go to a special room with them, so you're not with the other people, which I didn't like, as I would like to see my mom interacting with other people. The atmosphere was very homey. It does not smell like antiseptic or a senior facility. They have a real den, not a hospital-type group room. They had big armchairs, TVs, and puzzles everywhere, and people doing things. It's winter, so they can't go outside, but they were still active, which was really big. In some places, everything is just dead and quiet. I saw their dining facility, and it was not mealtime at that time, but the way they do their food is more like a restaurant. You can go in, and even though you all get the same meals, you can choose to have a hamburger or a sandwich if you don't like the meal they're serving. In several places, you have to tell them ahead of time, but here, you can actually just come in and say what you want; that's why it feels more like a restaurant."

"I went to the Country Cottages at Birmingham, Hoover. The cottage was just like what the name implies which is nice, makes you feel at home. The lady coming before the pandemic? They would take them to different events around. Things that happened monthly, you know, like the Fourth of July, they celebrate and different days, they celebrate. They make things, teach them to make different things, hanging things on the door, different activities like that. They have a nice sitting area, I think they have a little garden, where they grow flowers, and that they participate in."

"My father moved into Regency Retirement Village - Birmingham. They were extremely easy to work with and answered all my questions about the program. I was very impressed with both the administration and with the caregiving staff. I has been a really good experience. His room is a little bit on the small side, but it is very nice. It's close to the nurses' station, and it is a private room. I just kind of seen a floor plan of his room. I have not been able to go up to the unit because of Covid. I know that they have lots of activities. They have a private secure courtyard where the residents can get outside. They have an activities coordinator, and my father seems to be as satisfied as he can be. He is hard of hearing, and that staff has been very accommodating with his hearing aids. We have been able to visit, and it has not been terribly restrictive. They have been accommodated us by setting up a room downstairs off the lobby. The room is just meant for the residents who are in the memory care unit to be able to visit personally with the family. We have to make a reservation, but we can see him two or three times a week if we wish. They bring him down from the second floor to the first floor in the memory unit, then they come back and get him. He does not just go from one place to the other without someone accompanying him, but it has worked out really well."

"St. Martin's In the Pines was very, very nice. The staff was extremely nice and welcoming. We just visited there, and they gave us a packet. We had a friend of ours that lived there. They showed us her apartment. It was super nice. All the amenities are within the building, and Mother would have never had to get out of the building. She has elevator access or she could use the stairs, but they prefer that most of them use the elevator to prevent falling. They have activities. They have independent assisted, and nursing home care. They have a studio apartment. We had a friend that was living there, so we went in and looked at the space. However, my mom preferred a 1-bedroom. She was going from my 3-bedroom house into a studio and it bothered her a little bit. She saw how much room that this friend of ours had and it was 490 square feet. The staff was great. The person that lived there has been there for quite some time, and she told us how amazing the staff was, and she wouldn't tell us that if they were not so."

"I visited Lakeview Estates. They had a courtyard, game room, and two cafeterias on each floor. The rooms were nice. They're all being updated as the people go out. The place is very clean. The staff was very friendly."

"We like the attitude of the people who work at Somerby at St. Vincent's One Nineteen -- that's why I chose it for my mom. For the most part, they are very good. Secondly, I like the size of the room. It has a bathroom, a kitchenette and it is carpeted. I think the food is very good. For assisted living, they have assigned seating for dining, but they have an option to go to the main dining room which is formal and very nice, and they can order off the menu. It's really nice. The sanitation is very good. My mom doesn’t participate in many activities, but they do offer activities, and they offer transportation to doctors and to shopping. "

"I toured Truewood by Merrill, Riverchase and was very impressed with Chip over there. He's the director and he seems to run a very tight ship. I looked at the memory care and everything was immaculate, very well taken care of and well kept. He knew all the residents and knew everything that was going on. So, he was on top of things. The menu looked good too and we met other people behind the scenes, like those who dispense the medication and stuff and a couple of the lunch ladies, and they all seemed very nice."

"I like everything about the Kirkwood by the River memory care unit. There were a lot of activities going on and a lot of happy people and residents. I saw so many friendly staff, they had a chapel inside and it was just very well organized. Even one of the owners was there, interacting with the residents. I met the chaplain and it just seemed that everyone was just super, super friendly. The staff was very hands-on with the residents, very happy in their jobs, and seem to love the residents. They're going through a renovation, adding some memory care units. The rooms were rather small and needed to be updated, and that's what they're going to do. It was very clean."

"I stayed in rehab for 3 weeks (March 2023) after ankle/foot surgery. That meant I was wheelchair bound the whole time as I did not have enough strength to use a walker with one foot & leg because my hands & wrists are weak with arthritis. I was treated so amazingly & kind. I was responded to quickly if I had a need. The food was very good & plentiful. In fact, I was afraid I would weigh more when I got home. My room was good size. The bathroom was okay but it would have been nice to have handicap accessible there. That was the only negative. I loved my view out the window because I was in an L shape area so got to see lovely landscaping & the grass. The PT & OT was very useful, the therapists were knowledgeable & taught me so much. I enjoyed the large therapy room because we had laughing & smiling going on with the staff & residents. I felt at home & never lonely. We had a Mardi Gras party which was so much fun with great snacks, music, & games. The activities room was decked out in colorful Mardi Gras decorations. Although it’s (hopefully) a long time until I might need to have further services where it would be permanent for me, my husband & I’ve talked about the independent apartments which are in a lovely wooded area. It’s so peaceful on the grounds. I could imagine being on the porch having morning coffee. I recommend this place 100%."

"Plantation Manor is truly beautiful. The people are so friendly and carding. All private rooms with private bath rooms. I would not take my mom anywhere else! Absolutely love it!! Best SCALF pricing in Birmingham "
