My mother was at HillHouse Assisted Living and their activities roster was very good. They took them to different places, like a carnival and to their doctors' appointments. She had a room all to herself, which she liked better. It was a nice place and I would recommend it. It's just an expensive place. The staff was excellent, although sometimes they seemed a little confused about her medication. They never gave her anything she shouldn't have, but sometimes things weren't given. She takes something for her intolerance to dairy products, and sometimes we had to get them to remember to give her that or to have it on-hand. Sometimes they'd call and say they didn't have something on-hand. So, I had brought it in and whoever took it in had not written it down. There was never anything that was life threatening, but I felt that it was a little bit rocky on the people knowing what medications were stored. In general though, they were extremely good. There was just a little bit of confusion about medications, but again, nothing that's life or death or whatever.

Hill House was not appropriate for my mother because it seemed more like a nursing home than independent or assisted living. I didn't even take the full tour when I walked in. It was a place where a bunch of people were all lined up in wheelchairs and slumped over. My mother is nowhere near that stage so she wouldn't be happy there. It may be fine, the woman did say that they have assisted living and independent living, but the predominant feel of the place was that it was a nursing home, and we weren't interested in that. I don't know if it was a good place or not, but it wasn't appropriate for my mother. The facilities and amenities seemed adequate. It had a nice outside area and the building seemed fine. It seemed clean and well-staffed.

HillHouse had animals and kids and they brought in more activities so there's more people to interact with. There were always people being active and the food was better than most centers. The place was homey too. The rooms were nice and small enough for the residents to feel comfortable in. They also have tubs instead of showers, so they can relax.

This is an extraordinary place. I have visited many nursing homes and assisted living facilities over the years but have never seen a facility as warm, comfortable, caring, compassionate, supportive, friendly and professional as Hill House. My mother moved to Hill House seven years ago after breaking her hip, reinjuring it in another facility, having multiple hip repair surgeries, and being told by her doctor that she would never walk again. The Hill House staff were wonderful right from the start. They took great care of her, attended to all of her needs, and did everything possible to ease the transition from independent to assisted living. The nursing and personal care has been outstanding. Now my mother walks to the dining room twice a day and is very engaged in Hill House activities. Hill House is also special in planning resident activities that are creative, stimulating, engaging, entertaining and fun. Some examples are: Picnics by the water, costumes and a bonfire at Halloween, barbecues, residents baking pies and making crafts for a public Thanksgiving fair, excursions to the beach and a drive-in restaurant, daily exercise sessions, and stimulating games for all cognitive levels. Hill House has an inviting, family-like atmosphere. Family members and guests are always welcome to dine with residents at no charge. While the building is not upscale, it is located on a hill with beautiful views of tall pines and water and has a comfortable, home-like feel. My mother and my family feel very fortunate to have found Hill House.

Although this facility is in need of some updating (decorating wise); it is the best facility I have ever seen as far as care goes. The elderly are treated with the utmost respect and dignity. The nursing staff are always completely professional and the care is unsurpassed. The woodsy/pond setting is right out of a Ralph Waldo Emerson poem. I would be pround to have any one of my family members as a residet here. I would stay here myself!
